1 2 And 3 John

by Karen H. Jobes, 1 2 And 3 John Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download 1 2 And 3 John books, Designed for the pastor and Bible teacher, the Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament brings together commentary features rarely gathered in one volume. Written by notable evangelical scholars, each volume treats the literary context and structure of the passage in the original Greek, and each author provides an original translation based on the literary structure. The series consistently provides the main point, an exegetical outline, verse-by-verse commentary, and theology in application in each section of every commentary. Critical scholarship informs each step but does not dominate the commentary, allowing readers to concentrate on the biblical author’s message as it unfolds. While primarily designed for those with a basic knowledge of biblical Greek, all who strive to understand and teach the New Testament will find these books beneficial. The Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament series covers the entire New Testament in twenty volumes; Clinton E. Arnold serves as general editor. 1-3 John In her commentary on John’s letters, Karen H. Jobes writes to bridge the distance between academic biblical studies and pastors, students, and laypeople who are looking for an in-depth treatment of the issues raised by these New Testament books. She approaches the three letters of John as part of the corpus that includes John’s gospel, while rejecting an elaborate redactional history of that gospel that implicates the letters. Jobes treats three major themes of the letters under the larger rubric of who has the authority to interpret the true significance of Jesus, an issue that is pressing in our religiously pluralistic society today with its many voices claiming truth about God.

by Stephen S. Smalley, 1 2 3 John Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download 1 2 3 John books, Dr. Smalley's exhaustive commentary on the Greek text of the letters of John argues that they, together with the Fourth Gospel, record and reflect the spiritual history of the Johannine community itself. These letters contain theological, ethical and practical truths that are fundamental to the Christian position in every age: that Jesus is one with God as well as one with us; that love and righteousness are indispensable to the believer who seeks as a child of God to walk in the light; and that unity, however flexible, is a demand laid upon the whole Church at all times. This revision of the author's original 1984 commentary is a complete update. Dr. Smalley has revised the text, references, and bibliography to reflect advances in Johannine scholarship.

1 2 And 3 John

by John Painter, 1 2 And 3 John Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download 1 2 And 3 John books, The Johannine Epistles are today read as an important part of the Johannine literature. Yet the meaning of the text is often unclear. Part of the problem arises because, although 1 John is called an Epistle, it lacks the formal marks of an Epistle. In 1, 2, and 3 John, John Painter illuminates the relationship 1, 2, and 3 John have to each other and to the Gospel. Painter explains the historical context of the Johannine Epistles using a socio-rhetorical approach. The writings are shown to reflect a situation of conflict and schism within the Johannine community; they seek to persuade the readers of the truth of the writer's message. In this truth, the readers are encouraged to abide if they would have the assurance of eternal life. Painter also examines the inseparable connection between belief and ethical life in active love for one another. Through the socio-rhetorical approach Painter brings to light the continuing relevance of these writings. 1, 2, and 3 John is divided into two parts. Chapters under 1 John are "Introduction to the Exegesis of 1 John," "Outline of 1 John," "First Presentation of the Two Tests (1:6-2:27)," "Excursus: Sin and Sinlessness," "Excursus: Love of the Brother/Sister: of One Another," "Excursus: The Antichrist," "Second Presentation of the Two Tests (2:28-4:6)," "Third Presentation of the Two Tests (4:7-5:12)," "Conclusion (5:13-21), and " Excursus: 'A Sin Unto Death.'" Chapters under 2 and 3 John are "2 John," "Introduction to the Exegesis of 2 John," "Outline of 2 John," "Prescripti 2 John 1-3," "Body of the Letter (4-11)," "Notice of Intention to Visit (12)," and "Final Greetings (13)," "3 John," "Introduction to the Exegesis of 3 John," "Outline of 3 John," "Prescript: 3 John 1-2," "Body of Letter (3-12)," and "Final Greetings (13-15)." John Painter is the Foundation Professor of Theology at Charles Sturt University in Canberra, Australia.

James And 1 2 3 John

by Gareth L Reese, James And 1 2 3 John Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download James And 1 2 3 John books, This is a phrase-by-phrase commentary and exposition of the New Testament books of James and 1,2,3 John. This commentary is in use as a college textbook, yet is suitable for the lay church member. James and 1 John are written as epistles to Christians in general (i.e., not as letters to a particular church in Rome or Ephesus). Both were written by apostles we encounter often in the pages of the New Testament; both are men who played large roles in the life of the early Church. Each of these four epistles is unique within the New Testament canon, and each raises issues of interest and importance for our Christian faith and practice: The faultless roadmap for practical Christian living provided by the great spiritual principles taught by our Lord and Savior. The imperative need to receive the witness of God as given in Scripture through Jesus and His apostles. The fact that we have not followed myths when we embrace the doctrine of the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, God's Son, into the world to save sinners. The nature of true Christian fellowship - its exclusivity Godward and the kind of lifestyle it demands. How believers can know - by experience - the fact of their salvation. The loving way to counteract religious error. How Christians are to respond to those leaving the church. The parallels between 1st/2nd century Gnosticism and the pluralism and New Age theology of our 21st century. This commentary is conservative and evangelical Christian in its outlook, yet skillfully examines the Scriptures from multiple theological viewpoints. Introductory Studies cover authorship and attestation, the place and date of writing, original target audience to whom the letters were addressed, and the original purpose for writing. The Introductory Studies also discuss questions raised about these epistles by recent higher criticism - e.g., the relationship of James' theology to Paul's, the nature of the Gnosticism addressed in John's epistles, the theory of a Johannine community and its role (if any) in compiling epistles, and our ability to accurately reconstruct the life-setting of the 1st century Christianity which gave rise to each of these writings. Additionally, several Special Studies address important topics germane to these epistles. Since this commentary presumes the God-inspired nature of all Biblical writing, the author seeks to harmonize the teachings of James and 1,2,3 John with other relevant Scriptures, and also helpfully examines the original language in which the epistles were written. A fully annotated bibliography of other commentaries on James and 1,2,3 John is included to encourage readers to extend their own studies. This commentary continues the author's series on the books of the New Testament, and is written from the unique standpoint of the Restoration Movement, a position which allows him to approach Scripture with no special theological doctrine or dogma to defend and explicate. This approach provides an unhindered freedom to listen to what the Holy Spirit would tell us within the pages of the sacred Scriptures. By deliberately employing the time-honored grammatico-historical method of interpretation, the Word of God is allowed to impress upon our minds the intent the Divine Author had in mind. The author is Professor Emeritus of the New Testament at Central Christian College of the Bible (Moberly, MO).
