A Summer In The High Sierra

by Laurence Brauer, A Summer In The High Sierra Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download A Summer In The High Sierra books, A Summer in the High Sierra is based on Laurence Brauer's journal of a 38-day solo round trip backpacking through the timberline country from Yosemite to Kings Canyon. Traveling outside cultural and religious doctrines, Brauer examines the assumptions of human societies and find that neither the rational deconstructions of science nor the leap of faith of religion contain the breadth and depth of nature's message. Seeing beyond our dualistic doctrines, he redefines our concepts of human nature, evolution, and spirituality. The book features 96 full-color photographs illustrating the journey, which took the author along sections of the John Muir Trail, High Sierra Trail, and off-trail locations. An Epilogue recounting a ten-day trip one year later and an Afterword recounting a short return trip to Vogelsang in which the author reassesses the previous ten years are also included.

by Western Literature Association (U.S.), A Literary History Of The American West Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download A Literary History Of The American West books, Literary histories, of course, do not have a reason for being unless there exists the literature itself. This volume, perhaps more than others of its kind, is an expression of appreciation for the talented and dedicated literary artists who ignored the odds, avoided temptations to write for popularity or prestige, and chose to write honestly about the American West, believing that experiences long knowns to be of historical importance are also experiences that need and deserve a literature of importance.

My First Summer In The Sierra

by John Muir, My First Summer In The Sierra Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download My First Summer In The Sierra books, John Muir, a young Scottish immigrant, had not yet become a famed conservationist when he first trekked into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, not long after the Civil War. He was so captivated by what he saw that he decided to devote his life to the glorification and preservation of this magnificent wilderness. "My First Summer in the Sierra," whose heart is the diary Muir kept while tending sheep in Yosemite country, enticed thousands of Americans to visit this magical place, and resounds with Muir's regard for the "divine, enduring, unwasteable wealth" of the natural world. A classic of environmental literature, "My First Summer in the Sierra" continues to inspire readers to seek out such places for themselves and make them their own.

Leighton S High Sierra Check Dam Legacy

by Steve D. Bowman, Leighton S High Sierra Check Dam Legacy Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Leighton S High Sierra Check Dam Legacy books, This photographic journal chronicles the history and construction of the high Sierra check dams from the first one at Yellowhammer Lake in 1920 through the last one constructed at High Emigrant Lake in 1951, past the establishment of the Emigrant Wilderness in 1975, and through various stages of support and opposition which are on-going to this day. Each major period in either check dam construction or the period after is divided into separate chapters, with each check dam described in detail with historical and recent photographs, many that have never been published. In addition, available historical writings and records of Fred Leighton and others were utilized to provide a more in depth perspective on the check dams from those directly involved in construction and/or maintenance. Outdoor enthusiasts discovering the Emigrant Wilderness of the high Sierra for the first time might easily consider it a pristine wilderness, rich in wildlife, streams, lakes, and scenic views. And yet, this is one area where the hand of man has worked to enrich the natural landscape. One of the most notable changes man has made in this area is the construction of small rock dams at the outlet of selected lakes and meadows. These dams were called check dams by Fred W. Leighton, who developed the concept of raising the water level of natural lakes and meadows for fishery and riparian enhancement. These check dams provide an enhanced habitat for mountain fish by providing additional water flow in the late summer months when natural streams typically run very low or completely dry.
