Beyond Our Means

by Sheldon Garon, Beyond Our Means Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Beyond Our Means books, If the financial crisis has taught us anything, it is that Americans save too little, spend too much, and borrow excessively. What can we learn from East Asian and European countries that have fostered enduring cultures of thrift over the past two centuries? Beyond Our Means tells for the first time how other nations aggressively encouraged their citizens to save by means of special savings institutions and savings campaigns. The U.S. government, meanwhile, promoted mass consumption and reliance on credit, culminating in the global financial meltdown. Many economists believe people save according to universally rational calculations, saving the most in their middle years as they plan for retirement, and saving the least in welfare states. In reality, Europeans save at high rates despite generous welfare programs and aging populations. Americans save little, despite weaker social safety nets and a younger population. Tracing the development of such behaviors across three continents from the nineteenth century to today, this book highlights the role of institutions and moral suasion in shaping habits of saving and spending. It shows how the encouragement of thrift was not a relic of indigenous traditions but a modern movement to confront rising consumption. Around the world, messages to save and spend wisely confronted citizens everywhere--in schools, magazines, and novels. At the same time, in America, businesses and government normalized practices of living beyond one's means. Transnational history at its most compelling, Beyond Our Means reveals why some nations save so much and others so little. by James W. Shirley, The Life And Times Of James W Shirley Sr You Can Get There From Here Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Life And Times Of James W Shirley Sr You Can Get There From Here books, In the small town of Harrison City, Pennsylvania, Jim Shirley began his life surrounded by family and community members. It didn¿t matter that they didn¿t have electricity, used a galvanized steel washtub for bathing, and had an outhouse for other necessities. A loving and caring mother, older siblings, and a home built of love were the stepping stones to a self made man. As Jim grows older, he learns what he wants to do in life, how to create a family of his own, and how to draw the most out of what life has to offer a person. After becoming a licensed funeral director in 1959, he was employed in the Pittsburgh area. Later, he purchased a home under unusual circumstances in North Huntingdon Township, Pennsylvania. As a budding funeral director he inadvertently became a community leader in the Lions International organization and, presented his speaking skills, he showed us what it means to bring a new meaning to life and enjoy every moment of it with the same wondrous awe we had as children.

Signs Of The Times

by Ray Grasse, Signs Of The Times Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Signs Of The Times books, We may live in astonishing times, but they are not incomprehensible when you know how to read the signs. Everybody says we're entering the Age of Aquarius, but when does it start, and how will we know what it looks and feels like? Ray Grasse deciphers the signs and correspondences of our nearing Aquarian future, using the tools of astrology, synchronicity, and mythology. He draws richly from contemporary religion, art, politics, science, even current movies, to show how the cultural signs of Aquarius and our likely future are already apparent and changing our world. The Aquarian Age will be marked by its intensely mental quality, when information will be the driving force of society and the biggest challenges we face will be those of the mind. Decentralization will be the order of business, either the empowered individual will reign supreme, or the collective interests of globalized society will predominate. It could be both. We are all participants in the global drama and all aspects of our inner and outer lives are bound up with the new Aquarian themes. ‘Signs of the Times' is the authoritative travel guide for the trip into our future – don't leave the present without it.
