Refugees And Borders In South Asia

by Antara Datta, Refugees And Borders In South Asia Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Refugees And Borders In South Asia books, "The war in 1971 between India and Pakistan led to a huge refugee crisis. This book argues that the massive influx of ten million refugees into India within a few short months changed ideas about citizenship and belonging in South Asia. The book looks at how the Indian state, while generously keeping its borders open to the refugees, made it clear that these refugees were different from those generated by Partition, and would not be allowed to settle permanently. It discusses how the state was breaking its 'effective' link between refugees and citizenship, and how at the same time a second 'affective' border was developing between those living in the border areas, especially in Assam and West Bengal. The book argues that the present discourse regarding illegal infiltration from Bangladesh has a long historical trajectory in which the events of 1971 play a key role. It goes on to analyse the aftermath of the 1971 war and the massive repatriation project undertaken by the governments of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh to examine ways in which questions about minorities and belonging remained unresolved post-1971. The book is an interesting contribution to the history of refugees, border-making and 1971 in South Asia, as well as to studies in politics and international relations"--

Dynasties And Female Political Leaders In Asia

by Claudia Derichs, Dynasties And Female Political Leaders In Asia Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Dynasties And Female Political Leaders In Asia books, This book is the first comprehensive academic effort to examine the phenomenon of top female political leaders in Asia. It portrays prime ministers, presidents, and opposition leaders, but it is not a conventional biographical volume. Rather, it analyzes female politicians by means of case studies that are based on a common theoretical framework. The case studies were conducted over three years of field research, which included interviews with the female leaders themselves and members of their inner circle. Each chapter explores the similarities, but also points to the distinctiveness of each female leader, arising from political and social systems, cultural and religious conditions, and economic parameters. The Emergence Of Bangladesh

by Badruddin Umar, The Emergence Of Bangladesh Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Emergence Of Bangladesh books, This volume examines the events which led to the political liquidation of the Muslim League in the 1954 provincial elections in East Pakistan and the subsequent undermining of the results of this victory through interventions from the Central Government. The work provides some insights into the struggle over the framing of the constitution of Pakistan. It traces the gradual subversion of the democratic process through conspiracy from above and compromises and collusion from within the political process culminating in the declaration of Martial Law in 1958. The book is likely to be instructive for students, scholars and general researchers and will provoke political debate in both Pakistan and Bangladesh."--BOOK JACKET.

Islam And Political Legitimacy

by Shahram Akbarzadeh, Islam And Political Legitimacy Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Islam And Political Legitimacy books, Akbarzadeh and Saeed explore one of the most challenging issues facing the Muslim world: the Islamisation of political power. They present a comparative analysis of Muslim societies in West, South, Central and South East Asia and highlight the immediacy of the challenge for the political leadership in those societies. Islam and Political Legitimacy contends that the growing reliance on Islamic symbolism across the Muslim world, even in states that have had a strained relationship with Islam, has contributed to the evolution of Islam as a social and cultural factor to an entrenched political force. The geographic breadth of this book offers readers a nuanced appraisal of political Islam that transcends parochial eccentricities. Contributors to this volume examine the evolving relationship between Islam and political power in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan. Researchers and students of political Islam and radicalism in the Muslim world will find Islam and Political Legitimacy of special interest. This is a welcome addition to the rich literature on the politics of the contemporary Muslim world.
