Best Interests Of The Children

by Robert and Miriam Fertig, M.A., Best Interests Of The Children Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Best Interests Of The Children books, What should professionals?judges, lawyers, teachers, social workers, and Guardian ad Litem or CASA volunteers ?consider in pursuing the Best Interest of Children who have been abandoned, neglected or abused? How can Department of Children and Families improve their systems? "Best Interests of the Children" explains that the ethical principles of Beneficence and Non-Maleficence exist in the medical world to maximize benefit and to avoid harm to patients. The duty is to assist persons in need, and its converse, the duty to refrain from causing harm. These same principles should apply to the ?Best Interest? standard used in the children and families dependency welfare system, to protect defenseless children from parental abandonment, neglect and abuse. When parents separate, which of them should have primary responsibility for the child's care? Who is the actual ?psychological? parent? With compassion and actual case experiences, the authors, Miriam and Robert Fertig, help readers understand many of the key issues inherent in childcare decisions. They present a dozen Florida cases, as seen through the ?Eyes of Guardians.? They conclude that timely and effective services and continuity of care for the family is essential for the physical, emotional and psychological well-being of children. Case summaries from other states indicate that America's Department of Children and Families (DCF) has serious ?systemic problems.? The authors propose realistic solutions to improve this nationwide system. "Best Interests of the Children" will also enlighten the public and their legislators. "?Best Interests? is an eye-opening, heart-wrenching, information-packed guide to the world of families in crisis and the crucial role of Guardian ad Litem. Written in a conversational style, it can be blunt and feisty at times, but is always enlightening. I found myself shocked on one page, and then extremely edified and encouraged on the page that followed. Any book that is so provocative and stimulating will occasionally ignite a mental mini-debate between reader and author, but this is part of the ?fun and education, ? that comes from any book this stimulating, that penetrates mind and heart at the same time. Highly recommended." ? Reader Review by: Thomas Woodward (Ph.D. USF), Professor of Trinity College, Founder and Director of the C. S. Lewis Society, in Florida

The Best Interests Of The Child

by Council of Europe, The Best Interests Of The Child Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Best Interests Of The Child books, What does the concept of the best interests of the child mean in practice? How should it be interpreted and applied? This publication sheds lights on different aspects of this concept. The concept of the best interests of child, as stated in Article 3.1 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, has caused many controversies and debates amongst policy makers, experts and practitioners. Although central to a child’s full enjoyment of his or her rights, the meaning of the concept in practice and how it should be interpreted and applied, is still part of today’s debate. The Belgian Authorities and the Council of Europe organised on 9 and 10 December 2014 a conference on “The best interests of the child - A dialogue between theory and practice” to provide an opportunity for actors involved in decisions that have an impact on children’s lives to share knowledge and enhance the understanding of the concept of the child’s best interest. Featuring in this publication are the 21 different viewpoints presented during the conference on the concept of the best interests of the child. They are divided into four chapters namely those presenting general reflections of the concept; assessing, determining and monitoring best interests; using the concept in different environments; and understanding the concept in family affairs. All viewpoints agree on the fact that there is no comprehensive definition of the concept, and that its vagueness has resulted in practical difficulties for those trying to apply it. Some suggest that the best interest should therefore only be used when necessary, appropriate and feasible for advancing children’s rights, whereas others see the flexibility of the concept as its strong point. Through their different interpretations and analysis, this publication offers a solid contribution to the overall understanding of the concept of the best interests of child, necessary to improving and safeguarding children’s rights overall.

Education In The Best Interests Of The Child

by R. Brian Howe, Education In The Best Interests Of The Child Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Education In The Best Interests Of The Child books, A large body of research in disciplines from sociology and policy studies to neuroscience and educational psychology has confirmed that socioeconomic status remains the most powerful influence on children’s educational outcomes. Socially disadvantaged children around the world disproportionately suffer from lower levels of educational achievement, which in turn leads to unfavourable long-term outcomes in employment and health. Education in the Best Interests of the Child addresses this persistent problem, which violates not only the principle of equal educational opportunity, but also the broader principle of the best interests of the child as called for in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Building on the children’s rights work accomplished in their previous book, Empowering Children, Brian Howe and Katherine Covell identify three types of reform that can significantly close the educational achievement gap. Their findings make an important argument for stronger and more comprehensive action to equalize educational opportunities for disadvantaged children.

Before The Best Interests Of The Child

by Joseph Goldstein, Before The Best Interests Of The Child Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Before The Best Interests Of The Child books, The second volume in a classic trilogy of reference works often cited in child custody cases, which introduced the concept of the “least detrimental alternative” when addressing a child’s welfare. The second volume in a classic trilogy of works by Joseph Goldstein, former Sterling Professor Emeritus of Law at Yale Law School; Albert J. Solnit, the former director of the Yale Child Study Center, and Anna Freud, daughter of Sigmund Freud. These texts (Beyond the Best Interests of the Child was the first in the series, and In the Best Interests of the Child was the third) are classic references often cited in child custody cases; Before the Best Interests of the Child specifically addresses when the state should intervene. Rather than the familiar legal "best interests of the child" doctrine, the authors’s work is based on the more realistic standard of finding the "least detrimental alternative." This is indispensable reading for social workers, family court judges, lawyers, psychologists, and parents.
