Bungalow Kid

by Philip Ratzer, Bungalow Kid Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Bungalow Kid books, Both humorous and poignant, Bungalow Kid recalls what it was like to spend a summer in the Catskills at the height of the region’s “glory days.” The year is 1958. Philip, a twelve-year-old kid from the Bronx, is getting ready for his family’s annual trip upstate, where he’ll spend the summer in a bungalow colony in the tiny village of Loch Sheldrake, a faraway fairyland of mountains, lakes, starry nights, and dewy mornings. With his colony friends, he’ll explore the woods and fields, have an array of adventures, and even experience the special charm of a childhood summer romance. It was a time and place of wonderful memories wistfully looked back upon fifty years later, and lovingly recalled in this humorous and poignant memoir. What young Philip didn’t know was that there would never be another summer like this one. He was not alone. In the 1950s, about two thousand bungalow colonies dotted the countryside of Sullivan and Ulster counties, catering to an estimated one million people a year who spent all or part of their summer in “The Mountains.” Among them were countless kids like Philip, who today carry with them the fondest of memories and a nostalgic longing for a precious moment in time that can never be equaled. Today, they find themselves returning to the country, seeking out the places where they stayed so long ago, only to find that the world has changed a lot in fifty years, and time has a way of erasing all evidence of a world that used to be. Bungalow Kid vividly recreates what it was like to be a city kid in the Catskills in the 1950s, and reaches out to all those kids, now grown, who would very much like to go back.

The Old West Adventures Of Ornery And Slim

by Montana Kid Hammer, The Old West Adventures Of Ornery And Slim Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Old West Adventures Of Ornery And Slim books, Montana Kid Hammer continues his distinct brand of American old fashion storytelling tradition with, Back in the Saddle Again, the second novel in The Old West Adventures of Ornery and Slim cowman series. Ornery, a schoolteacher and Civil War survivor turned veteran cowhand, and Slim, a young Philadelphia orphan now a part learned cowman continue to ride for the brand simply known as the O U T (Oh-Ewe-Tee) Spread. Their partnership is rekindled as they are back in their saddles again to face down cantankerous critters, the harsh western prairie elements, the lay of the land, payroll robbing outlaws, run away stagecoaches, countless dangers of a cattle drive, a cow hunt, along with some not so common cowmen calamities. Ornery and Slim labor to craft an ongoing relationship with the boss, their many pards, and their calico-gal friends, all while building a hearty proficiency around the cow craft of their day. The setting for this storybook is far less fictional and happens on the high plains of the very real North American frontier west, circa 1880s. Also shared is that time-honored cattlemans code of the west, the one so highly prevalent in the folk of the era, and played out by this tomes many matchless characters. Conveyed are humorous escapades of the cowmen as they ply their cow craft for the brand. The anecdotal happenings are said so as to expose the wide range of cowman endeavors encountered along the trails and upon the plains of that very same unsettled frontier. This novel is designed to rekindle fond recollections of Old West evenings sat around campfires to a plethora of untold, yet hair-raising cowman tales. Here is a genuinely marvelous opportunity to return to those wild and wooly days of Americas western yesteryear.

Veramarykin

by Vera M. Hughes, Veramarykin Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Veramarykin books, Veramarykin is the story of a child in the 1930s and 40s, which contains Vera M Hughes’ lively memories of family life in the London County Council’s new housing estate in Downham near Bromley – where parents from areas of overcrowding brought up their families in good times and bad. Vera relates, with a wealth of anecdotes and family photos, her progression through childhood, adolescence and the beginning of adulthood, when she left school in 1945 to take her place in the world as a wage-earner. The story begins in the early 1930s with childhood games, dollies’ tea parties, the dreaded dentist, tales of a dangerous fish and a murderous budgie and a brother’s teasing. The annual family seaside holidays were eagerly anticipated and enjoyed, and very little of the world outside her home impinged on her childhood. However life changed in 1938 with a move to larger accommodation in another council estate, coinciding with a change of school and resulting in the loss of familiar ways and friends. Evacuation at the start of the Second World War in 1939 brought another upheaval until Vera’s return home – just in time for the Blitz – re-established family life and stability. The trials of life in wartime had simply to be accepted and endured, and although comparatively unscathed by bombs, the devastating effects of doodlebugs and rockets made themselves felt. Close involvement with the Scout and Guide movements in early adolescence provided lifelong friends whose subsequent wartime service in the Forces left a gap that was filled with correspondence until their safe return.

Bungalow 2 The phone call came on a hot July day—a day like any other for Marin County mom and freelance writer Tanya Harris. But this call—from Tanya’s agent—was anything but ordinary, offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: the chance to write a major Hollywood screenplay, a dream she had put aside long ago to devote her energies to her family. This time, Tanya knows she cannot refuse, even though she’s torn about leaving her husband and their daughters. From the moment she steps into her lush bungalow at the fabled Beverly Hills Hotel, Tanya is thrust into an intoxicating new world where she feels reborn—energized by the creativity swirling around her—yet the pull of her family at home is strong. Suddenly she’s working alongside A-list actors and a Hollywood legend: Oscar-winning producer Douglas Wayne, a man who always gets what he wants–and who seems to have his sights set on her. Flying home between shoots, struggling to reconnect with a family that seems to need her less and less, Tanya watches helplessly as her old life is pulled out from under her in the most crushing of ways. A Local Kid Does Only O K

by Ben L. Bassham, A Local Kid Does Only O K Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download A Local Kid Does Only O K books, A Local Kid (Does Only O.K.)is a witty and affectionate account of one boy's growing up in Rogers, Arkansas in the late forties and the fifties in the days before malls, credit cards, and big-box stores when people shopped and found entertainment in what is now the "historic" town center. A 1960 graduate of Rogers High School, Bassham recalls his checkered employment history as a soda jerk, dishwasher, fry cook, carpenter, and sports reporter (at age 17) for the oldRogers Daily News. Begun as a family history for his two daughters, this "remembrance" of his home town in the years after World War II grew into something more: a collection of lessons learned at the Presbyterian church; of triumphs and (mostly) disappointments on the gridiron and the basketball court; his brief career as a clarinetist under the spell of local musical prodigy Maxie Gundlach; Ben's love of the cars that graced dealers' showrooms; his devotion to fifties' television shows, and the many hours spent watching movies at the old Victory Theater. A cast of colorful local personalities comes alive in his portraits of town "characters," its leading citizens (including "Cactus" Clark, Joe Bill Hackler, Rev. Robert Moser, Heston Juhre, and others), and the author's eccentric relatives. Junk food consumed, clubs joined and abandoned, favorite "parking" spots, old days at the Monte Ne "Pyramids," and fun times on the White River in pre-Beaver Dam days are also lovingly recalled in this enjoyably off-beat autobiography.
