Terra Incognita

by Ann O’M. Bowman, Terra Incognita Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Terra Incognita books, Boon or blight? Ann Bowman and Michael Pagano define "vacant land" broadly, to include everything from brownfields (environmentally contaminated land) through trashed lots and abandoned buildings to greenspace (parks, community gardens, etc.). Terra Incognita takes a fresh look at what they believe can be the ultimate urban resource. Beyond the common studies of the influence of market forces, it explores how these areas are affected by the decisions of local governments, and then shows how vacant land can be a valuable strategic asset for localities. Terra Incognita derives from what—until now—has been the lack of substantial information about the amount and the diversity of urban vacant land. This book is based on an unprecedented survey sent to all U.S. towns with a population greater than 50,000, and contains data previously unavailable. Three cities were studied in greater depth for detailed case studies: the greater Phoenix and Seattle areas and Philadelphia-Camden. A number of other cities are cited frequently, including Boston, Chicago, Detroit, New York, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Oklahoma City, among many others. Identifying the fiscal, social, and development imperatives that drive the decisions local officials make about using vacant land, Bowman and Pagano pay particular attention to the varying dynamics of sales, property, and income taxes, and conclude with a model for making strategic decisions about land use based on a city's priorities.

Developing Frontier Cities

by Harvey Lithwick, Developing Frontier Cities Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Developing Frontier Cities books, The Unique Nature of Frontier Cities and their Development Challenge Harvey Lithwick and Yehuda Grad us The advent of government downsizing, and globalization has led to enormous com petitive pressures as well as the opening of new opportunities. How cities in remote frontier areas might cope with what for them might appear to be a devastating challenge is the subject of this book. Our concern is with frontier cities in particular. In our earlier study, Frontiers in Regional Development (Rowman and Littlefield, 1996), we examined the distinction between frontiers and peripheries. The terms are often used interchangeably, but we believe that in fact, both in scholarly works and in popular usage, very different connotations are conveyed by these concepts. Frontiers evoke a strong positive image, of sparsely settled territories, offering challenges, adventure, unspoiled natural land scapes, and a different, and for many an attractive life style. Frontiers are lands of opportunity. Peripheries conjure up negative images, of inaccessibility, inadequate services and political and economic marginality. They are places to escape from, rather than frontiers, which is were people escape to. Peripheries are places of and for losers.

Each chapter outlines an agenda for future research.

New Sport Management Reader

by John Nauright, New Sport Management Reader Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download New Sport Management Reader books, This book provides students and scholars with a selection of the state-of-the-art research and new conceptual thinking in the field of sport management by a diverse and prominent group of researchers. It is the first anthology to situate sport management within the broader frameworks of sport sociology and cultural studies, a process already begun in general business studies. The chapters that comprise this collection are divided into three sections: Part I challenges sport management students and scholars to engage with epistemologies and methodologies associated with critical theory to better contextualise their thinking and research. Part II features critically informed research focused within three key topical areas of sport management: marketing and sponsorship, consumption, and governance and policy development. Thirteen case studies provide wide-ranging examples of research on the global sports industry through which students, professors, and professionals alike can form cross-cultural analyses. Part III presents work on emerging themes such as economic development, human rights, media culture, and sports tourism. Conceived and developed as a clarion call for a more critical, reflexive approach to sport management education and practice, this book is designed to spark debate, discussion, and reflection and to better inform research questions and professional practice in the future. The book is essential reading for all students, scholars, and professionals interested in achieving a better understanding of the globalised nature of the sports industry and to improving future practice and research.
