Doing Anthropology In Wartime And War Zones

by Reinhard Johler, Doing Anthropology In Wartime And War Zones Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Doing Anthropology In Wartime And War Zones books, World War I marks a well-known turning point in anthropology, and this volume is the first to examine the variety of forms it took in Europe. Distinct national traditions emerged and institutes were founded, partly due to collaborations with the military. Researchers in the cultural sciences used war zones to gain access to »informants«: prisoner-of-war and refugee camps, occupied territories, even the front lines. Anthropologists tailored their inquiries to aid the war effort, contributed to interpretations of the war as a »struggle« between »races«, and assessed the »warlike« nature of the Balkan region, whose crises were key to the outbreak of the Great War.

Anthropology At War

by Andrew D. Evans, Anthropology At War Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Anthropology At War books, Between 1914 and 1918, German anthropologists conducted their work in the midst of full-scale war. The discipline was relatively new in German academia when World War I broke out, and, as Andrew D. Evans reveals in this illuminating book, its development was profoundly altered by the conflict. As the war shaped the institutional, ideological, and physical environment for anthropological work, the discipline turned its back on its liberal roots and became a nationalist endeavor primarily concerned with scientific studies of race. Combining intellectual and cultural history with the history of science, Anthropology at War examines both the origins and consequences of this shift. Evans locates its roots in the decision to allow scientists access to prisoner-of-war camps, which prompted them to focus their research on racial studies of the captives. Caught up in wartime nationalism, a new generation of anthropologists began to portray the country’s political enemies as racially different. After the war ended, the importance placed on racial conceptions and categories persisted, paving the way for the politicization of scientific inquiry in the years of the ascendancy of National Socialism.

Legacies Of Violence Eastern Europe S First World War

by Jochen Böhler, Legacies Of Violence Eastern Europe S First World War Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Legacies Of Violence Eastern Europe S First World War books, The First World War began in the Balkans, and it was fought as fiercely in the East as it was in the West. Fighting persisted in the East for almost a decade, radically transforming the political and social order of the entire continent. The specifics of the Eastern war such as mass deportations, ethnic cleansing, and the radicalization of military, paramilitary and revolutionary violence have only recently become the focus of historical research. This volume situates the ‘Long First World War’ on the Eastern Front (1912–1923) in the hundred years from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century and explores the legacies of violence within this context. Anthropological Abstracts 9 2010

by Ulrich Oberdiek, Anthropological Abstracts 9 2010 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Anthropological Abstracts 9 2010 books, Anthropological Abstracts (AA) is a reference journal published once a year in print, but also under www.anthropology-online.de and announces - in English language - most publications in the field of cultural/social anthropology published in the German language area (Austria, Germany, Switzerland). Since many of these publications have been written in German, and most German publications are not included in the major English language abstracting services, Anthropological Abstracts offers a convenient source of information for anthropologists and social scientists in general who do not read German, to become aware of anthropological research and publications in German-speaking countries. Included are journal articles, monographs, anthologies, exhibition catalogs, yearbooks, etc. Most abstracts are authored by the editor, others are specified accordingly. This journal is edited by Ulrich Oberdiek since 1993 (formerly: Abstracts in German Anthropology; since 2002: Anthropological Abstracts).

A Supernatural War

by Owen Davies, A Supernatural War Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download A Supernatural War books, It was a commonly expressed view during the First World War that the conflict had seen a major revival of "superstitious" beliefs and practices. Churches expressed concerns about the wearing of talismans and amulets, the international press paid considerable interest to the pronouncements of astrologers and prophets, and the authorities in several countries periodically clamped down on fortune tellers and mediums due to concerns over their effect on public morale. Out on the battlefields, soldiers of all nations sought to protect themselves through magical and religious rituals, and, on the home front, people sought out psychics and occult practitioners for news of the fate of their distant loved ones or communication with their spirits. Even away from concerns about the war, suspected witches continued to be abused and people continued to resort to magic and magical practitioners for personal protection, love, and success. Uncovering and examining beliefs, practices, and contemporary opinions regarding the role of the supernatural in the war years, Owen Davies explores the broader issues regarding early twentieth-century society in the West, the psychology of the supernatural during wartime, and the extent to which the war cast a spotlight on the widespread continuation of popular belief in magic. A Supernatural War reveals the surprising stories of extraordinary people in a world caught up with the promise of occult powers.

Nasza Wojna Tom I Imperia 1912 1916

by Włodzimierz Borodziej, Nasza Wojna Tom I Imperia 1912 1916 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Nasza Wojna Tom I Imperia 1912 1916 books, Odkrywcza historia frontów wschodnich I wojny światowej. Dwaj historycy, Włodzimierz Borodziej i Maciej Górny, wykonali olbrzymią pracę, by w przystępny sposób przybliżyć czytelnikowi ten fragment dziejów.
