Download Grassroots Environmental Action books, Managing resources sustainably on the local level is essential for achieving the global goal of sustainable development. The importance of people's participation for sustainable development has recently become increasingly acknowledged yet there is little understanding of the multiple dimensions that such participation involves. Grassroots Environmental Action questions the viability of traditional management systems. Case studies from Latin America, Asia and Africa focus on areas where local people are vigorous actors in the determination of their own future and that of their environment.

Community Environmental Action

by Nicola Shelley, Community Environmental Action Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Community Environmental Action books, Community environmental action is defined in this study as a process which enables communities to play a more active and effective role in enhancing or preserving their local environment. This study examines the process of community environmental action using case studies of two Local Authority initiatives in West Yorkshire: the Green Forum in Calderdale and the Community Environment Project in Bradford. The former is a consultative body aimed at facilitating more effective participation of local interest groups in the development of Calderdale Council's countryside policy. The latter is an initiative of Bradford Council's Planning Division, aimed at improving the environment of an inner city ward through the involvement of local people. The literature review examines the historical context of community environmental action within the public participation and community development movements. It also examines the issues raised by past experience in community action and environmental improvement projects. The research design adopted for the two case studies was primarily an impressionistic enquiry which used the methods of semi-structured interviews, document analysis and observation. The analysis examines the influence exerted by key individuals and organisations over the development of the project. Particular attention is given to the success of the projects in achieving community involvement and environmental change. The study highlights the problems experienced by community environmental action projects in areas such as evaluation and monitoring, the provision of funding and other support structures and stimulating community involvement.
