Ethnicity Belonging And Biography

by Gabriele Rosenthal, Ethnicity Belonging And Biography Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Ethnicity Belonging And Biography books, The subjects of ethnicity and collective belonging have enjoyed high priority on the agenda of social science research over the last 20 years. Nevertheless there is need (and considerable scope) for further mutual adjustment and refinement of theoretical concepts, substantive empirical discoveries and research techniques. This volume offers a contribution to such efforts by leading practitioners of qualitative research with backgrounds in diverse disciplines. Their research focuses on the perspectives and biographical experiences of concrete "historical" actors within the contexts of migration, cultural diversity and social conflicts.

Neoliberal Globalisation And Resistance From Below

by Jasper Abembia Ayelazuno, Neoliberal Globalisation And Resistance From Below Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Neoliberal Globalisation And Resistance From Below books, As bearers of their own emancipation, the political agency of the subaltern classes is a vexed question, a time-honoured one at that. Why do the subalterns endure injustices without revolting most of the time, but revolt sometimes against some injustices? The euphoria of ’globalisation-from-below’, this book argues, skirts responsibility of addressing this question by presuming a groundswell of resistance across the world against neoliberal globalisation. In contrast to this oeuvre, Neoliberal Globalisation and Resistance from Below engages this question squarely by using the socio-historical approach to explain why the subalterns resist neoliberal globalisation in Bolivia and not in Ghana. The author urges scholars of critical political economy to pay greater attention to why the subalterns resist, rather than how they resist, or what the ideal end of their resistance should be. Such refocusing of the research and political lens will yield a more realistic picture of what is politically possible in the social context of peripheral capitalism regarding an anti-capitalist revolution. The author further argues that this refocusing will cure many of the romantic anti-capitalist claims and banal wishful thinking of a socialist revolution in peripheral capitalist regions such as Latin American, The Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and Sub-Saharan Africa. Neoliberal Globalisation and Resistance from Below will be of interest to students and scholars of African politics, neoliberalism, globalisation, political economy and subaltern politics.

Chiefs Priests And Praise Singers

by Wyatt MacGaffey, Chiefs Priests And Praise Singers Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Chiefs Priests And Praise Singers books, In his new book, the eminent anthropologist Wyatt MacGaffey provides an ethnographically enriched history of Dagbon from the fifteenth century to the present, setting that history in the context of the regional resources and political culture of northern Ghana. Chiefs, Priests, and Praise-Singers shows how the history commonly assumed by scholars has been shaped by the prejudices of colonial anthropology, the needs of British indirect rule, and local political agency. The book demonstrates, too, how political agency has shaped the kinship system. MacGaffey traces the evolution of chieftaincy as the sources of power changed and as land ceased to be simply the living space of the dependents of a chief and became a commodity and a resource for development. The internal violence in Dagbon that has been a topic of national and international concern since 2002 is shown to be a product of the interwoven values of tradition, modern Ghanaian politics, modern education, and economic opportunism.

Staging Ghana

by Paul Schauert, Staging Ghana Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Staging Ghana books, The Ghana Dance Ensemble takes Ghana's national culture and interprets it in performance using authentic dance forms adapted for local or foreign audiences. Often, says Paul Schauert, the aims of the ensemble and the aims of the individual performers work in opposition. Schauert discusses the history of the dance troupe and its role in Ghana's post-independence nation-building strategy and illustrates how the nation's culture makes its way onto the stage. He argues that as dancers negotiate the terrain of what is or is not authentic, they also find ways to express their personal aspirations, discovering, within the framework of nationalism or collective identity, that there is considerable room to reform national ideals through individual virtuosity.
