The Bilingual Mental Lexicon

by Longxing Wei, The Bilingual Mental Lexicon Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Bilingual Mental Lexicon books, This book proposes the Bilingual Lemma Activation Model as a method for exploring the nature and activity of the bilingual mental lexicon in both speech production and language acquisition. This model claims that the bilingual’s two languages are not equally activated in code-switching; one playing a crucial role in grammatical frame building, and the other being activated at a lexical level due to psycholinguistic reasons. To test this model, the book analyzes bilingual speech data from naturally occurring intrasentential code-switching instances involving various language pairs. A second claim of this model is that code-switching naturally occurs because certain lemmas underlying some particular lexical items stored in the bilingual mental lexicon are language-specific, and such lemmas are in contact in bilingual speech. To further test this model, second language acquisition data are analyzed here to describe and explain sources of language transfer at the level of abstract lexical structure. Thus, from some psycholinguistic perspectives, this model views bilingual speech involving code-switching and interlanguage performance data as predictable outcomes of bilingual systems in contact. This book will appeal to graduate students and researchers in both theoretical and applied linguistics.

Second Language Task Based Performance

by Peter Skehan, Second Language Task Based Performance Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Second Language Task Based Performance books, Second Language Task-Based Performance is the first book to synthesize Peter Skehan’s theoretical and empirical contributions in one place. Exploring three distinct themes in each section (theory, empirical studies, and assessment), this influential body of work is organized in such a way that it provides an updated reflection on the material and makes it relevant to today’s researchers. In each section, an early publication is matched by at least one later publication, followed by a newly written commentary chapter, the combination of which provides the important function of offering a wider-ranging discussion. This book is an invaluable resource for researchers interested in second language task-based research or second language acquisition more generally.

Multilingual Lexical Recognition In The Mental Lexicon Of Third Language Users

by Weronika Szubko-Sitarek, Multilingual Lexical Recognition In The Mental Lexicon Of Third Language Users Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Multilingual Lexical Recognition In The Mental Lexicon Of Third Language Users books, The monograph constitutes an attempt to demonstrate that trilinguals should be considered as learners and speakers in their own right as opposed to L2 learners with a view to enumerating consequences this would bring to third or additional language teaching. Its theoretical part offers an insight into the structure of the multilingual mental lexicon which is a product of the interplay of a whole array of cross-linguistic factors in the minds of multilingual speakers. The empirical part reports the findings of an empirical study which aimed to investigate connections which are formed between multiple languages in a multilingual mind. All the aspects, analyzed in the experiments are part of a broader question of how multilinguals make their lexical decisions and, more specifically, how they recognize words from different languages. The book closes with the discussion of the role of the obtained results for multilingual didactics as well as some possible areas for future research.

Language Acquisition

by Prof. David Singleton, Language Acquisition Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Language Acquisition books, This book examines the evidence relative to the idea that there is an age factor in first and second language acquisition, evidence that has sources ranging from studies of feral children to evaluations of language programmes in primary schools. It goes on to explore the various explanations that have been advanced to account for such evidence. Finally, it looks at the educational ramifications of the age question, with particular regard to formal second language teaching in the early school years and in ‘third age’ contexts.
