Social Geography In International Perspective

by John Eyles, Social Geography In International Perspective Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Social Geography In International Perspective books, Social geography has been one of the great growth areas in geography in recent decades. It has brought within geographical analysis a wide range of new subject matter that has proved extremely invigorating for the discipline, such as ethnic segregation, crime and environment, differences in residential housing and public service provision, and inner city problems. At the same time the growth of social geography has heightened geographers' awareness of social questions and given rise to the so-called "welfare approach" whereby geographers express their social conscience and call for greater social justice in the spatial distribution of social services. The social geography movement however has not been evenly spread throughout the worldódifferent parts of the world vary in the emphasis they give to topics. This book surveys the current international situation of the social geography school. It discusses the contemporary trends, the leading figures, issues of concern, and differences of approach that are now to be found in social geography around the world.

Reducing Geographical Imbalances Of Health Workers In Sub Saharan Africa

by Christophe Lemiere, Reducing Geographical Imbalances Of Health Workers In Sub Saharan Africa Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Reducing Geographical Imbalances Of Health Workers In Sub Saharan Africa books, The human resources crisis in the health sector has been gathering attention on the global stage. To date, however, most of this attention has focused on shortages of health human resources (HRH) at the national level. At least as important are problems at the sub-national level. Massive geographic and skill mix imbalances are reflected in the perilous undersupply of HRH in most rural areas. Virtually all Sub-Saharan African countries suffer from significant geographic imbalances. Very little substantive information or documentation exists on the problem. Even less is known about the lessons from policies aimed at addressing urban-rural human resource imbalances, let alone experiences of Sub-Saharan Africa countries, with such policies. There also appears to be a disconnect between the objectives and efforts of policymakers on the one hand and the functioning of national health labor markets and labor market behavior on the other hand. This disconnect hinders policy effectiveness and the efficient utilization of resources intended to narrow urban-rural inequities. In Sub-Saharan Africa government policies, often limited to the management of public sector vacancies, appear to be elaborated, prescribed, and implemented independently of labor market considerations. Partly as a result, they are unable to effectively address urban-rural imbalances, which are an outcome of labor market dynamics. This report discusses and analyzes labor market dynamics and outcomes (including unemployment, worker shortages, and urban-rural imbalances of categories of health workers) from a labor economics perspective. It then use insights from this perspective as a basis for elaborating policy options that incorporate the underlying labor market forces. The goal of the study is to address undesirable outcomes (including urban-rural HRH imbalances) more effectively. The book is thus suitable for researchers, policy analysts and policy makers with an interest in understanding and improving the allocation of human resources for health in the developing world.

Africa In Contemporary Perspective

by Manuh, Takyiwaa, Africa In Contemporary Perspective Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Africa In Contemporary Perspective books, An important feature of Ghanaian tertiary education is the foundational African Studies Programme which was initiated in the early 1960s. Unfortunately hardly any readers exist which bring together a body of knowledge on the themes, issues and debates which inform and animate research and teaching in African Studies particularly on the African continent. This becomes even more important when we consider the need for knowledge on Africa that is not Eurocentric or sensationalised, but driven from internal understandings of life and prospects in Africa. Dominant representations and perceptions of Africa usually depict a continent in crisis. Rather than buying into external representations of Africa, with its 'lacks' and aspirations for Western modernities, we insist that African scholars in particular should be in the forefront of promoting understanding of the pluri-lingual, overlapping, and dense reality of life and developments on the continent, to produce relevant and usable knowledge. Continuing and renewed interest in Africa's resources, including the land mass, economy, minerals, visual arts and performance cultures, as well as bio-medical knowledge and products, by old and new geopolitical players, obliges African scholars to transcend disciplinary boundaries and to work with each other to advance knowledge and uses of those resources in the interests of Africa's people.
