Hegemonic Peace And Empire

by Ali Parchami, Hegemonic Peace And Empire Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Hegemonic Peace And Empire books, This book examines the language and the ideology of the Pax Romana, the Pax Britannica and the Pax Americana within the broader contexts of 'hegemony' and 'empire'. It addresses three main themes: a conceptual examination of the way in which hegemony has been justified; a linguistic study of how the notion of pax (usually translated as peace) has been used in ancient and modern times; and a study of the international orders created by Rome and Britain. Using an historiographical approach, the book draws upon texts from Greco-Roman antiquity, and sources from the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries to show how the pax ideology has served as a justification for hegemonic foreign policy, and as an intellectual exercise in power projection. From Tacitus' condemnation of what he described as 'creating a wilderness and calling it peace', to debates about the establishment of a Pax Americana in post-Saddam Hussein's Iraq, the book shows not only how the governing elite in each of the three hegemonic orders prescribed to a loose interpretation of the pax ideology, but also how their internal disagreements and different conceptualisations of pax have affected the process of 'empire-building'. This book will be of interest to students of international history, empire, and International Relations in general.

Transforming Enterprise

by Andrew Yancey, Transforming Enterprise Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Transforming Enterprise books, How does Christian faith integrate with capitalism? This question has been at the heart of Christian ethics for more than three hundred years, but rarely as complex and important as now. The polarizing influence of consumer capitalism has extended into virtually every domain of human life. On the one hand, capitalism has contributed to increases in standards of living and life expectancy, especially among those in extreme poverty. On the other, it has exacerbated income inequality, environmental damages, and social displacement. For contemporary American evangelical theology, this is problematic. It has long been on a quest to show that Christian faith harmonizes with capitalistic enterprise. But can faith harness the transformational power of consumer capitalism without being affected by its excesses? For many, the election of Donald Trump as president has revealed a great divide within American evangelicalism about the links between Christianity, economic power, and moral character. Working from the field of academic practical theology in interdisciplinary dialogue with business management ethics, Transforming Enterprise? shows why and how a reframing of the relationship between Christian faith and capitalistic enterprise is needed in the contemporary postsecular milieu.

The investigation is based on the presumption that we can distill from the professes "casus belli" the basic religious and moral ideas as well as the political ideology of Assyrian kingship and empire. In addition, this study tries to determine the literary conventions employed in presenting the causes for war. This monograph is only the first part of a comprehensive and comparative study on "causus belli" in the royal inscriptions from the Ancient Near East.

Is There Hope For Uncle Sam

by Jan Nederveen Pieterse, Is There Hope For Uncle Sam Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Is There Hope For Uncle Sam books, For over a century now, America has dominated global politics and the global imagination. Yet as the dollar declines, inequality increases, rates of consumption are unprecedented and American unilateralism comes under fire, such hegemony is increasingly unsustainable. In this provocative new book, leading sociologist Jan Nederveen Pieterse asks whether it's possible for America to chart a different course. Nederveen Pieterse argues that correcting the course of decline would mean taking drastic steps. Only a reinvention of New Deal politics could address social inequality, whilst repositioning itself in world politics would mean adopting genuine multilateralism. In the current 'American bubble' however, political and corporate unaccountability are so entrenched, and the constants of policy – support for Wall Street, the Pentagon and Israel – are so widely accepted by powerful elites that change is unlikely to come from within. Is there Hope for Uncle Sam? is a clear and provocative look at one of the big questions facing us in this century.
