Social Work And Society

by Pollock, Sarah, Social Work And Society Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Social Work And Society books, It is essential that social work students understand the lasting impact political decision making can have on service users, yet little guidance exists on this subject. This valuable book provides a comprehensive introduction to politics in social work, unifying the themes of political ideology and social construction across several areas of social work practice, including emerging areas of practice. The book: • Introduces the dominant political ideologies in the UK; • Examines the impact of these ideological perspectives on different demographic groups; • Explores emerging areas of growing political interest such as radicalisation; • Employs case studies and examples from practice to aid student understanding. Including helpful key points to guide reading at the beginning of each chapter, as well as exercises for seminars and further reading recommendations, this text will be an invaluable resource to all students in social work.

Social Work Social Justice And Human Rights

by Colleen Lundy, Social Work Social Justice And Human Rights Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Social Work Social Justice And Human Rights books, Social workers take pride in their commitment to social and economic justice, peace, and human rights, and in their responses to related inequalities and social problems. At a time when economic globalization, armed conflict, and ecological devastation continue to undermine human rights and the possibilities for social justice, the need for linking a structural analysis to social work practice is greater than ever. The second edition of this popular social work practice text more fully addresses the connection between social justice and human rights. It includes a discussion of social work's role in promoting peace and responding to environmental problems. It also places a greater attention on the links between social work theories/concepts and practice skill/responses. The text has been updated and revised throughout with four new chapters: social work and human rights, cultural competence and practice with immigrant communities, social work and mental health communities, and practice with couples and families. Detailed case studies demonstrate the integration of theory, policy, and practice.

Psychiatric Ideologies And Institutions

by , Psychiatric Ideologies And Institutions Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Psychiatric Ideologies And Institutions books, The authors of this volume point out that what is ordinarily termed the psychiatric hospital's "social structure" is principally derived from three sources: the number and kinds of professionals who work there; the treatment ideologies and professional identities of these professionals; and the relationships of the institution and its professionals to outside communities, both professional and lay. They describe hospitals as sites where ideological battles characterizing the mental health arena are being fought, implemented, critiqued, modified, and transformed. This classic monograph in medical sociology was originally published in the 1960s. The period studied was 1958 through 1963, when somatic and psychotherapeutic ideologies were flourishing--as now--and milieutherapy was just emerging. The research team was multidisciplinary: three sociologists, one psychologist, and one psychiatrist. Three distinct psychiatric environments were researched: two at the Chicago State Hospital--"chronic services" and "treatment services"--and one at a private hospital. What evolved were thoughtful comparative analyses of hospitals, wards, professionals, ideological positions, careers, and organizational and situational placements.

Structural Social Work

by Robert P. Mullaly, Structural Social Work Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Structural Social Work books, The need for an alternative to conventional social work is more obvious today than ever before. Given its acceptance of our present social order and its emphasis on reform of the individual and limited social reform, conventional social work appears powerless to deal with the increasing socialproblems that have already overloaded a diminishing welfare state. By continuing to recycle mainstream theories of social work practice that do nothing to change the present order, conventional social work actually contributes to the ideological hegemony of patriarchy, classism, racism and otheroppressive thought structures. The New Structural Social Work reveals the shortcoming of welfare capitalism as a social system and shows how conventional social work has failed to respond to systemic social problems. Mullaly presents a coherent and consistent theory of progressive social work, with oppression as its centralfocus, and examines elements of its political practice. It is shown how this practice is carried out within the social agency, outside the agency, and within the personal lives of structural social workers. This third edition has been extensively revised and updated, and includes.DT an expanded discussion of the political paradigms that influence social work in CanadaDT a new chapter on feminist, antiracist, and postmodernist critiques of the neo-conservative, liberal, social democratic, and Marxist paradigms that dominated the nineteenth and twentieth centuriesDT a new chapter that assesses the influence of the 'Third Way' and the role that social work plays in Third Way jurisdictions such as the UK.DT improved pedagogical aids to make this book more accessible to the mid-level university market.
