Increasing Productivity And Improving Livelihoods In Aquatic Agricultural Systems A Review Of Interventions

by Castine, S.A.[Author]; Sellamuttu, S.S.[Author]; Cohen, P.[Author]; Chandrabalan, D.[Author]; Phillips, M.[Author], Increasing Productivity And Improving Livelihoods In Aquatic Agricultural Systems A Review Of Interventions Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Increasing Productivity And Improving Livelihoods In Aquatic Agricultural Systems A Review Of Interventions books, Aquatic agricultural systems (AAS) are food production systems in which the productivity of freshwater or coastal ecosystems contributes significantly to total household nutrition, food security, and income in developing countries. The Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) engages in research in development to address this challenge. The goal of the CGIAR research program on Aquatic Agricultural Systems (referred to in this paper as “the AAS program”) is to harness the development potential of aquatic agricultural systems to improve the livelihood security and well-being of an estimated 10 million by 2016 poor people who are dependent on these systems This working paper draws lessons from the target countries through a review of productivity interventions such as modifying habitats, harnessing underutilized productive resources, improving the integration of production commodities, supporting community-based natural resource management, and genetically improving strains. In total, this paper reviewed 20 productivity interventions.

Food And Nutrition Security In The Barotse Floodplain System

by Pasqualino, M., Food And Nutrition Security In The Barotse Floodplain System Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Food And Nutrition Security In The Barotse Floodplain System books, The CGIAR Research Program on Aquatic Agricultural Systems (AAS) is being implemented in ten communities in the Barotse floodplain of Zambia’s Western Province. With a focus on the rural poor and vulnerable, the AAS program aims to reduce poverty and improve food security by harnessing the development potential, productivity and diversity of aquatic and agricultural systems. The development challenge in the Barotse floodplain, as identified by relevant stakeholders, is to make effective use of seasonal flooding patterns and natural resources through more productive and diversified aquatic agricultural management practices that improve the lives and livelihoods of the poor and vulnerable. Food and nutrition are essential to support the overall AAS program objective and overcome the specific development challenge of the Barotse floodplain. Zambia has very high malnutrition rates, particularly for stunting in children under five. Poor nutritional status, especially of women and children, inhibits individual growth and development, and negatively impacts the overall health, productivity and economic potential of a community. The purpose of this report is to analyze the food and nutrition security situation within the Barotse floodplain. It explores multiple sectors, including nutrition, agriculture, health, and gender, at the national, provincial and community level to provide a comprehensive understanding of food and nutrition in the ten AAS communities in relation to the country as a whole. The analysis will provide informative inputs to the AAS Barotse hub design process to develop an appropriate food and nutrition research-in-development agenda.

Sustainable Intensification In Smallholder Agriculture

by Ingrid Oborn, Sustainable Intensification In Smallholder Agriculture Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Sustainable Intensification In Smallholder Agriculture books, Sustainable intensification has recently been developed and adopted as a key concept and driver for research and policy in sustainable agriculture. It includes ecological, economic and social dimensions, where food and nutrition security, gender and equity are crucial components. This book describes different aspects of systems research in agriculture in its broadest sense, where the focus is moved from farming systems to livelihoods systems and institutional innovation. Much of the work represents outputs of the three CGIAR Research Programs on Integrated Systems for the Humid Tropics, Aquatic Agricultural Systems and Dryland Systems. The chapters are based around four themes: the conceptual underpinnings of systems research; sustainable intensification in practice; integrating nutrition, gender and equity in research for improved livelihoods; and systems and institutional innovation. While most of the case studies are from countries and agro-ecological zones in Africa, there are also some from Latin America, Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

Communication Interventions For Gender Equality And Social Equity In Aquatic Agricultural Systems

by Underwood, C.R., Communication Interventions For Gender Equality And Social Equity In Aquatic Agricultural Systems Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Communication Interventions For Gender Equality And Social Equity In Aquatic Agricultural Systems books, ÿIn light of recent calls to integrate gender equality and social equity (GESE) strategies into development projects, researchers have begun to explore the gender-related inequalities in aquatic agricultural systems (AAS) and agriculture. This literature review addresses a gap in existing research by identifying the role of GESE-related communication components in AAS and agricultural interventions. This critical review of peer-reviewed and gray literature in AAS and agriculture will identify opportunities for future work and inform the design and implementation of relevant communication interventions.

Livestock And Water Interactions In Mixed Crop Livestock Farming Systems Of Sub Saharan Africa Interventions For Improved Productivity

by Descheemaeker, Katrien, Livestock And Water Interactions In Mixed Crop Livestock Farming Systems Of Sub Saharan Africa Interventions For Improved Productivity Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Livestock And Water Interactions In Mixed Crop Livestock Farming Systems Of Sub Saharan Africa Interventions For Improved Productivity books, Focusing on mixed crop-livestock farming systems of sub-Saharan Africa, this review brings together the available knowledge in the various components of the livestock and water sectors. Through an analysis of livestock-water interactions, promising strategies and interventions to improve Livestock Water Productivity are proposed. In the biophysical domain, the numerous interventions relate to feed, water and animal management. These are interlinked with interventions in the socio-political-economic domain. The paper identifies critical research and development gaps in terms of methodologies for quantifying water productivity and integrating different scales, and also in terms of institutions and policies.
