On The Trail Of The Septuagint Translators

by Anneli Aejmelaeus, On The Trail Of The Septuagint Translators Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download On The Trail Of The Septuagint Translators books, The essays of this revised and expanded collection were written by Prof. Anneli Aejmelaeus over a period of 25 years. The thread that runs through all these essays and holds the collection together is translation technique, which is characterized as a central aspect of methodology rather than an object of study. Only by tracing the trail of the Septuagint translators is it possible to gain a reliable picture of the different translators and of the Hebrew Vorlage their work was based on. The themes dealt with in the individual essays range from the study of syntactical features of the Greek language used in the Septuagint to the quest for the correct understanding of the underlying Hebrew, from the overall description of the translation character of certain biblical books to the application of translation technical data in textual criticism of the Hebrew text, and from methodological questions to the discussion of theological interpretation by the translators, reflecting the ongoing discussion in the international field of Septuagint studies and representing a significant and distinctive critical position in it.

The Septuagint And Messianism

by Michael Anthony Knibb, The Septuagint And Messianism Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Septuagint And Messianism books, The question of the extent to which the Septuagint reflects an evolution in messianic belief in comparison with the Masoretic Text has come into prominence in recent years, and in view of the role played by messianism in Jewish belief of the late Second Temple period and in early Christianity it seemed very appropriate that "The Septuagint and Messianism" should be chosen as the theme of the 2004 Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense. This volume contains the papers given at the Colloquium, which are concerned both with methodological issues and with the interpretation of specific texts (in practice the majority of the texts in the Septuagint for which a messianic interpretation has been claimed). The papers are very far from all reflecting the same approach, and it has frequently happened that the same texts have been treated by different contributors from very different viewpoints. But the fact such different viewpoints are expressed is a proper reflection of the complexity of the issues involved in the question of the extent of messianic belief in the Septuagint, and of the fact that the question requires a nuanced answer. It is in any case hoped that the varied approaches reflected in the papers will serve to make clear the underlying reasons for the differences between those who take a "minimalist" and those who take a "maximalist" view on the subject of the Septuagint and Messianism.

On Conditionals In The Greek Pentateuch

by Anwar Tjen, On Conditionals In The Greek Pentateuch Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download On Conditionals In The Greek Pentateuch books, The book examines conditionals in the Greek Pentateuch from the point of view of the study of translation syntax. It takes seriously into account the double character of Septuagintal Greek, both as a translation from Hebrew and as vernacular Greek. Methodologically, the underlying Hebrew is taken as the point of departure in close comparison with the resultant translation, with the purpose of examining major features in the translators? handling of this complex construction. These include the rendering of verbal and non-verbal forms in the protasis and apodosis, the question of sense-division between the two constituent clauses, the influence of genre or discourse type and interference from the underlying form or structure. Detailed analyses of the resultant translation displays features that are natural Greek, on the one hand, and features that betray the character of "translation-language", on the other hand, owing to interference from the source text. The latter manifests itself most conspicuously in renderings that are ungrammatical or unnatural, and, in a more subtle way, through equivalents which are grammatically acceptable but occur with a strikingly high frequency in the Septuagint as compared with original Greek compositions contemporary with the Septuagint.

The Proto Lucianic Problem In 1 Samuel

by Tuukka Kauhanen, The Proto Lucianic Problem In 1 Samuel Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Proto Lucianic Problem In 1 Samuel books, The Lucianic text of the Historical Books is demonstrably a late, recensional text, but it has numerous curious agreements with the earliest witnesses against B and the majority of the manuscripts. Tuukka Kauhanen aims at throwing light on this »proto-Lucianic problem« in 1 Samuel (1 Kingdoms) by taking a comprehensive view of all the relevant witnesses: Josephus, Hippolytus, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Cyprian, Old Latin, and the Qumran Samuel scrolls. Special attention is paid on the use of patristic writers as textual witnesses. Agreement in a reading between a patristic reference and a Biblical manuscript may be only apparent or coincidental, especially if the patristic text is in Latin. Kauhanen also demonstrates how the differences between the Greek and Latin languages affect the text-critical decisions. Kauhanen concludes that there are significantly less of actual proto-Lucianic readings than has often been supposed. The old theory of the “proto-Lucianic recension” – i.e., that the earliest layer of the Lucianic text was revised according to a Hebrew text akin of the Qumran Samuel scrolls – is refuted. Moreover, it is found that the Lucianic text – together with an early witness – has often preserved the original reading that has been lost in most or all of the other witnesses. The study has been carried out in connection with the Göttingen edition project for 1 Samuel and it uses all the available textual material. It aims at advancing the search of the oldest attainable form of the text of the Septuagint, thus advancing the textual criticism of the Hebrew Bible as well. It also provides much background information on the use of the Septuagint among early Christian writers.

Lxx Isaiah 24

by Wilson de Angelo Cunha, Lxx Isaiah 24 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Lxx Isaiah 24 books, Explore how interpretation affects translation In this volume Cunha argues that the differences found between the Septuagint text of Isaiah and the Hebrew of the Masoretic Text must be weighed against the literary context in which they are found. The author demonstrates that LXX Isa 24:1–26:6 can be seen as a coherent ideological composition that differs greatly from the way scholars have interpreted MT Isa 24:1–26:6. This coherence comes across through the use of certain lexemes and conjunctions throughout the passage. The book lays the case that a scribe or translator already had an interpretation before he started the process of translation that shaped his translation of the Hebrew text into Greek. Features: An introduction sketching the history of research on LXX Isa 24:1–26:6 A focused comparision of the Masoretic Text to the Septuagint A thorough discussion of the coherence of LXX Isa 24:1–26:6

The Septuagint And Homeric Scholarship In Alexandria

by Sylvie Honigman, The Septuagint And Homeric Scholarship In Alexandria Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Septuagint And Homeric Scholarship In Alexandria books, The Letter of Aristeas tells the story of how Ptolemy Philadelphus of Egypt commissioned seventy scholars to translate the Hebrew Bible into Greek. Long accepted as a straightforward historical account of a cultural enterprise in Ptolemaic Alexandria, the Letter nevertheless poses serious interpretative problems. Sylvie Honigman argues that the Letter should not be regarded as history, but as a charter myth for diaspora Judaism. She expounds its generic affinities with other works on Jewish history from Ptolemaic Alexandria, and argues that the process of translation was simultaneously a process of establishing an authoritative text, comparable to the work on the text of Homer being carried out by contemporary Greek scholars. The Letter of Aristeas is among the most intriguing literary productions of Ptolemaic Alexandria, and this is the first book-length study to be devoted to it.
