Pop Up And Movable Books

by Ann Rothwell Montanaro, Pop Up And Movable Books Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Pop Up And Movable Books books, Ranging from Victorian picture stories to Disney classics and contemporary works on environmental issues, pop-up and movable books have amused, enlightened, and entertained children and adults for almost 150 years. Although most movable books are designed primarily for children, a significant number of fiction and nonfiction titles are intended for adult readers. Despite their enormous popularity, they are rarely reviewed or included in lists of children's books, and are seldom purchased for circulating libraries. Many are unindexed. Montanaro identifies, indexes, and describes over 1,600 titles by publication date, personal names of contributors, and series titles.

Expanding Adaptation Networks

by Kate Newell, Expanding Adaptation Networks Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Expanding Adaptation Networks books, This book addresses print-based modes of adaptation that have not conventionally been theorized as adaptations—such as novelization, illustration, literary maps, pop-up books, and ekphrasis. It discusses a broad range of image and word-based adaptations of popular literary works, among them The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Daisy Miller, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Moby Dick, and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The study reveals that commercial and franchise works and ephemera play a key role in establishing a work’s iconography. Newell argues that the cultural knowledge and memory of a work is constructed through reiterative processes and proposes a network-based model of adaptation to explain this. Whereas most adaptation studies prioritize film and television, this book’s focus on print invites new entry points for the study of adaptation.

Interactive Books

by Jacqueline Reid-Walsh, Interactive Books Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Interactive Books books, Movable books are an innovative area of children’s publishing. Commonly equated with spectacular pop-ups, movable books have a little-known history as interactive, narrative media. Since they are hybrid artifacts consisting of words, images and movable components, they cross the borders between story, toy, and game. Interactive Books is a historical and comparative study of early movable books in relation to the children who engage with them. Jacqueline Reid-Walsh focuses on the period movable books became connected with children from the mid-17th to the early-19th centuries. In particular, she examines turn-up books, paper doll books, and related hybrid experiments like toy theaters and paignion (or domestic play set) produced between 1650 and 1830. Despite being popular in their own time, these artifacts are little known today. This study draws attention to a gap in our knowledge of children’s print culture by showing how these artifacts are important in their own right. Reid-Walsh combines archival research with children’s literature studies, book history, and juvenilia studies. By examining commercially produced and homemade examples, she explores the interrelations among children, interactive media, and historical participatory culture. By drawing on both Enlightenment thinkers and contemporary digital media theorists Interactive Books enables us to think critically about children’s media texts paper and digital, past and present.
