Religion And The Inculturation Of Human Rights In Ghana

by Abamfo Ofori Atiemo, Religion And The Inculturation Of Human Rights In Ghana Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Religion And The Inculturation Of Human Rights In Ghana books, It has been maintained that the secular nature of modern human rights makes them incompatible with the religious orientation of African and non-Western societies. However, in view of the resilience of religion in the global and local public sphere, it is important to explore how religion can contribute to the promotion and enjoyment of human rights. Based on fieldwork conducted in Ghana, Abamfo Ofori Atiemo here establishes a convergence between human rights and local religious and cultural values in African societies. He argues that human rights represent universal 'dream values'. This allows for a cultural embedding of human rights in Ghana and other non-Western societies. He argues that 'dream values' are usually presented in religious language and proclaimed, for example, by prophets and seers or expressed in certain forms of taboo, proverbs or legal norms. He employs the concept of inculturation, adaptation of the way Church teachings are presented to non-Christian cultures, as a hermeneutical tool for developing a model to understand the encounter between universal human rights and local cultures. Offering a new model for explaining the relation between religion and human rights, Religion and the Inculturation of Human Rights in Ghana offers a novel perspective on the links between global trends and local cultures underpinned by strong currents of religious ideas.

Law And Religion In Africa

by Pieter Coertzen, Law And Religion In Africa Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Law And Religion In Africa books, In our time the study of law and religion is emerging as a wide-ranging and vital academic discipline, with increasingly urgent implications for society at large. Lying at the intersection of a variety of other disciplines ? law, theology, religious studies, political science, sociology and anthropology, to name only the most obvious ? the field of law and religion is generating a burgeoning volume of interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary research and study. The current volume is proof of this. The discussion of the relationship between law and religion, as seen from a variety of perspectives in Africa, underscores the critical importance of the issues involved in the everyday life of all citizens. It is accordingly vital for governments to take note of the scholarly results that are produced. We hope that this volume will contribute to this aim.

Post Materialist Religion

by Mika T. Lassander, Post Materialist Religion Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Post Materialist Religion books, Post Materialist Religion discusses the transformations ofthe individual's worldview, and the role religion and nature can play incontemporary European societies. In doing so, Mika Lassander brings intoconversation sociological theories of secularisation and social-psychologicaltheories of interpersonal relations, the development of morality, and thenature of basic human values. European societies are marked by an ethos of secularism, whereby overt display of religiosity is generally considered objectionable orat least unusual, with the exception of special occasions or festivals. PostMaterialist Religion discusses how this ethos is criticised for oppressing theindividual's right to religious expression, and for forgetting that religion isan integral part of society's cultural history and grounding for ethics andmorality. Mika Lassander however argues that this ethos is a directconsequence of the cultural history itself and societal changes. He suggeststhat it is not a direct symptom of linear secularisation or of forgetting traditions, but an indication of the loss of relevance of 'religious aspects' such asbeliefs and dogma, of traditional religions. Furthermore, he argues that it is notan indication of the loss of ethical value base, but, rather, a change in thevalue base itself and consequently the transformation of the legitimating framework ofthis value base.

Religion Law Politics And The State In Africa

by Seth Tweneboah, Religion Law Politics And The State In Africa Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Religion Law Politics And The State In Africa books, Applying a legal pluralist framework, this study examines the complex interrelationships between religion, law and politics in contemporary Ghana, a professedly secular State characterised by high levels of religiosity. It aims to explore legal, cultural and moral tensions created by overlapping loci of authority (state actors, traditional leaders and religious functionaries). It contends that religion can function as an impediment to Ghana’s secularity and also serve as an integral tool for realising the State’s legal ideals and meeting international human rights standards. Using three case studies – legal tensions, child witchcraft accusations and same-sex partnerships – the study illustrates the ways that the entangled and complicated connections between religion and law compound Ghana’s secular orientation. It suggests that legal pluralism is not a mere analytical framework for describing tensions, but ought to be seen as part of the solution. The study contributes to advancing knowledge in the area of the interrelationships between religion and law in contemporary African public domain. This book will be a valuable resource for those working in the areas of Law and Religion, Religious Studies, African Studies, Political Science, Legal Anthropology and Socio-legal Studies.

Religion Conflict And Democracy In Modern Africa

by Samuel K. Elolia, Religion Conflict And Democracy In Modern Africa Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Religion Conflict And Democracy In Modern Africa books, Spanning various regions of Sub-Saharan Africa, the authors of this volume come together to explore the complex relationship between religion and democracy in contemporary Africa. As a result of the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union, many African countries have come to the realization, however partial, that political and social change is inevitable in spite of government heavy-handedness and threats. It has also become evident that no political system that refuses to permit freedom of political expression and alternative systems of governance could continue to be sustained. It is in precisely this political climate that religious institutions have collaborated with other elements of civil society to call for political reforms, with the church often becoming the prominent voice against oppressive governments in countries such as Kenya and South Africa. It is the purpose of this book to assess how religion shapes political issues and to what extent religious forces influence the civil society. By acknowledging the role of the civil society, the essays recognize the resilience that comes out of Africa even when the sociopolitical situation seems unbearable.
