Download Sumatra Andaman Islands Earthquake And Tsunami Of December 26 2004 books, Prepared by the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering of ASCE On December 26, 2004, one of the largest earthquakes of the last hundred years occurred in the Indian Ocean, outside of Sumatra and the Andaman Islands. This earthquake set into motion a transoceanic tsunami that struck coasts of the Andaman Sea, Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean, and Arabian Sea. Damages to lifelines as well as enormous casualties were reported in the wake of this disaster. This TCLEE Monograph provides a summary of the damage observations throughout the affected region. Topics covered include: geoscience and tsunami generation, roadway transportation systems, electrical power systems, water systems, wastewater systems, railway systems, airports, seaports and harbors, telecommunications systems, social services, and tsunami warnings, de-alerts and warning systems. This monograph will be beneficial to all those involved in developing policies to improve preparedness for future tsunami events, including public officials, engineers, scientists, planners, design professionals, facility owners, and the public. The Andaman Nicobar Accretionary Ridge

by P.C. Bandopadhyay , The Andaman Nicobar Accretionary Ridge Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Andaman Nicobar Accretionary Ridge books, Rocks exposed across the hundreds of islands that belong to the 800 km long Andaman--Nicobar archipelago provide a condensed window into the active subduction zone that separates the India--Australia plate from the over-riding Burma--Sunda plate. Despite a strategic and seismically active location the Andaman-Nicobar ridge has seen comparatively little research. This Memoir provides the first detailed and comprehensive account of geological mapping and research across the island chain and adjacent ocean basins. Chapters examine models of Cenozoic rifting of the Andaman Sea and the regional tectonic and seismogenic framework. A detailed critical review of the Andaman–Nicobar stratigraphy, supported by new data, includes arc volcanism and a description of Barren Island, India’s only active volcano. Seismic history and hazards and the impacts of the 2004 earthquake and tsunami are also described. The volume ends with an examination of the region’s natural resources and hydrocarbon prospects.

The Vulnerable Andaman And Nicobar Islands

by Poonam Tripathi, The Vulnerable Andaman And Nicobar Islands Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Vulnerable Andaman And Nicobar Islands books, This first full-length book addresses disasters in the context of vulnerability of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands that comprise 572 islands in the Bay of Bengal. It looks at the disasters that the islands have experienced in the last 200 years and analyzes major disasters since colonization by the British. Raising some critical questions, this book attempts to understand the overall profile of disasters – the facts, causes, damage, response and recovery – in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It discusses earthquakes, cyclones, tsunami and epidemics, as well as impacts of World War II, the penal colony and the post-Independence resettlement on the tribal population. The work will serve as a rich resource with its detailed tables, figures, maps and diagrams; appendices; and database ranging from travelogues, Census of India reports and fieldwork to Right to Information (RTI) petitions that collect hitherto unknown facts. The book will be useful to students of geography, disasters and disasters management, climate and environmental studies, history, sociology, island and ocean studies, and South Asian studies.

The 1755 Lisbon Earthquake Revisited

by Luiz Mendes-Victor, The 1755 Lisbon Earthquake Revisited Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The 1755 Lisbon Earthquake Revisited books, The 1755 earthquake and tsunami were influential not only in Portugal but in all European and North African countries where the devastating effects were felt. The entire world was deeply impressed and the discussion of its causes generated a large amount of scientific and metaphysical speculation. It inspired philosophers, poets and writers. The socio-economic consequences of the event were great and affected the future organization and development of Portugal. The possibility of a similar occurence urges society and the scientific community to reflect on its lessons. Audience This work is of interest to experts in seismology, earthquake engineering, civil protection, urban planning and it is a reference book for doctoral students.

Three Great Tsunamis Lisbon 1755 Sumatra Andaman 2004 And Japan 2011

by Harsh K. Gupta, Three Great Tsunamis Lisbon 1755 Sumatra Andaman 2004 And Japan 2011 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Three Great Tsunamis Lisbon 1755 Sumatra Andaman 2004 And Japan 2011 books, Tsunamis are primarily caused by earthquakes. Under favourable geological conditions, when a large earthquake occurs below the sea bed and the resultant rupture causes a vertical displacement of the ocean bed, the entire column of water above it is displaced, causing a tsunami. In the ocean, tsunamis do not reach great heights but can travel at velocities of up to 1000 km/hour. As a tsunami reaches shallow sea depths, there is a decrease in its velocity and an increase in its height. Tsunamis are known to have reached heights of several tens of meters and inundate several kilometres inland from the shore. Tsunamis can also be caused by displacement of substantial amounts of water by landslides, volcanic eruptions, glacier calving and rarely by meteorite impacts and nuclear tests in the ocean. In this SpringerBrief, the causes of tsunamis, their intensity and magnitude scales, global distribution and a list of major tsunamis are provided. The three great tsunamis of 1755, 2004 and 2011are presented in detail. The 1755 tsunami caused by the Lisbon earthquake, now estimated to range from Mw 8.5 to 9.0, was the most damaging tsunami ever in the Atlantic ocean. It claimed an estimated 100,000 human lives and caused wide-spread damage. The 2004 Sumatra Andaman Mw 9.1 earthquake and the resultant tsunami were the deadliest ever to hit the globe, claiming over 230,000 human lives and causing wide-spread financial losses in several south and south-east Asian countries. The 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake and the resultant tsunami were a surprise to the seismologists in Japan and around the globe. The height of the tsunami far exceeded the estimated heights. It claimed about 20,000 human lives. The tsunami also caused nuclear accidents. This earthquake has given rise to a global debate on how to estimate the maximum size of an earthquake in a given region and the safety of nuclear power plants in coastal regions. This Brief also includes a description of key components of tsunami warning centres, progress in deploying tsunami watch and warning facilities globally, tsunami advisories and their communication, and the way forward.
