Sustaining The West

by Liza Piper, Sustaining The West Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Sustaining The West books, Western Canada’s natural environment faces intensifying threats from industrialization in agriculture and resource development, social and cultural complicity in these destructive practices, and most recently the negative effects of global climate change. The complex nature of the problems being addressed calls for productive interdisciplinary solutions. In this book, arts and humanities scholars and literary and visual artists tackle these pressing environmental issues in provocative and transformative ways. Their commitment to environmental causes emerges through the fields of environmental history, environmental and ecocriticism, ecofeminism, ecoart, ecopoetry, and environmental journalism. This indispensable and timely resource constitutes a sustained cross-pollinating conversation across the environmental humanities about forms of representation and activism that enable ecological knowledge and ethical action on behalf of Western Canadian environments, yet have global reach. Among the developments in the contributors’ construction of environmental knowledge are a focus on the power of sentiment in linking people to the fate of nature, and the need to decolonize social and environmental relations and assumptions in the West.

Sustaining The Hope For Unity

by Erin Brigham, Sustaining The Hope For Unity Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Sustaining The Hope For Unity books, What is unity and how does it serve as a goal for ecumenical dialogue? How can churches, ecumenical organizations, ministers, and theologians effectively approach this goal in the twenty-first century? Sustaining the Hope for Unity offers a methodological reflection on these questions using insights of contemporary critical theory. With particular attention to the work of Jürgen Habermas, the book develops a framework for exchanging religious narratives in a postmodern context marked by pluralism and ambiguity. Using this framework to address questions that have emerged out of the life of the World Council of Churches, Sustaining the Hope for Unity argues that unity must be imagined eschatologically in order to achieve inclusive and non-coercive dialogue between diverse Christian communities. Looking ahead to ecumenism in the twenty-first century, it makes a case for the role of the WCC as a public space for the exchange of religious narratives.

Sustaining The Soil

by Chris Reij, Sustaining The Soil Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Sustaining The Soil books, Indigenous soil and water conservation practices are rarely acknowledged in the design of conventional development projects. Instead, the history of soil and water conservation in Africa has been one of imposing external solutions without regard for local practice. There is a remarkably diverse range of locally developed and adapted technologies for the conservation of water and soil, well suited to their particular site and socio-economic conditions. But such measures have been ignored, and sometimes even overturned, by external solutions. Sustaining the Soil documents farmers' practices, exploring the origins and adaptations carried out by farmers over generations, in response to changing circumstances. Through a comparative analysis of conservation measures - from the humid zones of West Africa to the arid lands of the Sudan, from rock terraces in Morocco to the grass strips of Swaziland - the book explores the various factors that influence adoption and adaptation; farmers' perceptions of conservation needs; and the institutional and policy settings most favorable to more effective land husbandry. For the first time on an Africa-wide scale, this book shows that indigenous techniques work, and are being used successfully to conserve and harvest soil and water. These insights combine to suggest new ways forward for governments and agencies attempting to support sustainable land management in Africa, involving a fusion of traditional and modern approaches, which makes the most of both the new and the old.

Sustaining The Forests Of The Pacific Coast

by Donald K. Alper, Sustaining The Forests Of The Pacific Coast Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Sustaining The Forests Of The Pacific Coast books, The forests of British Columbia and the U.S. Pacific Northwest have long been key to the biophysical and economic well-being and the cultural identity of the region. During the last two decades these forests have become the subject of increasing conflict due to competing demands, which are a reflection of conflicting economic interests and social/political values and visions. This book examines the sources of conflict and suggests steps toward resolving forest policy issues. It is unique in two ways: First, it examines forest policy in the context of a binational region, exploring how two political systems, facing similar cultural and economic challenges, have treated their forests. Second, the book brings consideration of environmental justice to forest policy discourse by highlighting perspectives of people--Natives, private non-industrial forest owners, citizen activists and workers in the emerging non-timber forest economy--whose voices are often unheard in forest policy debate.
