Talking The Walk Walking The Talk

by Marc Shell, Talking The Walk Walking The Talk Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Talking The Walk Walking The Talk books, This book argues that we should regard walking and talking in a single rhythmic vision. In doing so, it contributes to the theory of prosody, our understanding of respiration and looking, and, in sum, to the particular links, across the board, between the human characteristics of bipedal walking and meaningful talk. The author first introduces the philosophical, neurological, anthropological, and aesthetic aspects of the subject in historical perspective, then focuses on rhetoric and introduces a tension between the small and large issues of rhythm. He thereupon turns his attention to the roles of breathing in poetry—as a life-and-death matter, with attention to beats and walking poems. This opens onto technical concepts from the classical traditions of rhetoric and philology. Turning to the relationship between prosody and motion, he considers both animals and human beings as both ostensibly able-bodied creatures and presumptively disabled ones. Finally, he looks at dancing and writing as aspects of walking and talking, with special attention to motion in Arabic and Chinese calligraphy. The final chapters of the book provide a series of interrelated representative case studies.

Talking The Walk

by Julia Helene Ibbotson, Talking The Walk Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Talking The Walk books, Can professional women "talk the walk"? In the 21st century, increasing numbers of women may aspire more and more to higher management positions. Indeed, today's young women expect promotional prospects in their chosen careers. But statistics show that they are not achieving the success they desire. The norm is still for women's progress in the workplace to be halted at junior management levels. Dr Julia Ibbotson, an academic, researcher and writer, looks at some of the reasons why and suggests ways of reversing this trend. In this book, the author presents research evidence from a study which explores the issues of management communication from a gender perspective in secondary schools in the UK. It arose from a concern regarding the imbalance of men and women progressing to higher levels of management, as shown in the statistics published by the UK's Department for Education in a series of documents over 20 years. Current research also indicates that this picture has still not changed by 2011. So, what can be done to change it? Evidence in this book looks at the possibility that there are gender differences in the way men and women managers talk in the workplace, which have the effect of undermining women's chances of promotion to higher leadership positions. In other words, do women "talk the walk"? And should CEOs think more carefully about the gender balance of their management and leadership teams so that they can create more effective working groups fit for the economic issues of the twenty first century recession and post-recession? Praise for Talking the Walk ..".an excellent piece of work" (Professor David Young) ..".a very talented teacher, writer and leading academic..positive and inspiring.." (Dr Deirdre Hughes) "a lifetime of experience and insight...a timely and ongoing challenge, a valid contribution to the debate" (Professor Marie Parker-Jenkins) "invaluable to those wishing to challenge and transform the current management culture...in a style that is accessible and engaging to the general reader" (Professor Elaine Millard) "a great writer..." Teaching Writing

by Christina Russell McDonald, Teaching Writing Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Teaching Writing books, By its arrangement and its contents, this collection of essays performs at least two important functions for teachers of writing: it demonstrates that the work of our recent past is still valuable, and it contributes to the efforts of recent years to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Such a new vision of our history and a new level of understanding between practitioners and theorists could provide the foundation for a more productive, enlightened disciplinary future, explains Gary Tate in the foreword to this collection. Teaching Writing: Landmarks and Horizons, edited by Christina Russell McDonald and Robert L. McDonald, is designed to present an overview of some of the major developments in the establishment of composition studies as a field during the past thirty-five years. The essays are theoretically grounded but are focused on pedagogy as well. Divided into two parts, the first presents nine landmark essays, selected and introduced by distinguished composition scholars, and the second brings together eight new essays by emerging scholars.
