Foreign Direct Investment In Korea

by Bernie Bishop, Foreign Direct Investment In Korea Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Foreign Direct Investment In Korea books, Published in 1997, this book traces the history of foreign investment policy in South Korea from 1961 until the present. It shows how Korea adopted a highly successful interventionist strategy towards foreign direct investment channeling it into areas of the economy where it could achieve the most benefit for the country’s economic development. In recent years Korea has tried to adopt a more market driven approach. However, differences within various institutions within the public and private sector led to policy confusion and ineffectiveness in meeting policy goals. The conclusion reached is that moving from an interventionist strategy to a market orientated strategy is difficult in this policy area. The book breaks new ground because it shows that while the conventional wisdom is that a 'market economy' approach is beneficial, moving from an interventionist policy to a market-orientated one is problematic and cannot be accomplished quickly.

South Korea S Rise

by Uk Heo, South Korea S Rise Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download South Korea S Rise books, "South Korea's phenomenal rise has been studied extensively by political scientists and economists both in terms of its impact on democratization and as a role model for economic development. Yet little attention has been devoted to exploring the nexus between economic development and foreign policy. In South Korea's Rise, Uk Heo and Terence Roehrig propose a new theoretical framework to illustrate how an increase in a country's economic prosperity can bring about change to its foreign policy, prompting greater involvement in the international system, the transition to democracy, an expanded set of interests and increased tools to pursue its foreign policy goals. As a rising middle power, analysis of South Korea's foreign policy is crucial to our understanding of the power structure and future relations in East Asia. This is essential reading for all students and scholars with an interest in Asia, foreign policy and global economics"--

The Korean Government And Public Policies In A Development Nexus

by Huck-ju Kwon, The Korean Government And Public Policies In A Development Nexus Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Korean Government And Public Policies In A Development Nexus books, In the postwar period, Korea’s economic and social-political metamorphosis is a rare example of a successful transition from one of the world’s poorest developing countries to a highly sophisticated industrial society—an experience which many developing countries are keen to emulate. The change is particularly significant as Korea was able to reduce poverty and keep social inequality at a modest level during its rapid economic development. This volume analyzes the Korean transition in regards to the political and institutional foundation of its government and public policies. The government of Korea single-mindedly carried out public policies to stimulate economic growth, but the government and public policies have themselves been affected and changed by the process. The contention of this volume is that the transition of Korean society and the evolution of the Korean government are the results of two-way interactions. In this context, the volume analyzes the way in which the dynamics of public administration were shaped within the Korean government and the kinds of public policies and instruments that were adopted to encourage this economic and social development. This analysis will allow a more complete understanding of the economic and social transformation of Korea. Surprisingly, there is a paucity of research on this aspect—a gap which this volume seeks to fill. This volume shows that it is necessary to maintain consistency and coherence in government and public policy in order to achieve economic and social transformation, making it of interest to both scholars and policy-makers concerned with development in the Asia-Pacific.

Japan S Security Relations With China Since 1989

by Reinhard Drifte, Japan S Security Relations With China Since 1989 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Japan S Security Relations With China Since 1989 books, Japan's Security Relations with China since 1989 raises the crucial question of whether Japan's political leadership which is still preoccupied with finding a new political constellation and with overcoming a deep economic crisis is able to handle such a complex policy in the face of an increasingly assertive China and a US alliance partner with strong swings between engaging and containing China's power. This study of the highly topical bilateral relationship will be of great interest to students and researchers in Japanese and Chinese Studies, Politics, International Relations and Security Studies.
