The Grammar Of Knowledge

by Alexandra Y. Aikhenvald, The Grammar Of Knowledge Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Grammar Of Knowledge books, The Grammar of Knowledge offers both a linguistic and anthropological perspective on the expression of information sources, as well as inferences, assumptions, probability and possibility, and gradations of doubt and beliefs in a range of languages. The book investigates twelve different languages, from families including Tibeto-Burman, Nakh-Dagestani, and Austronesian, all of which share the property of requiring the source of information to be specified in every sentence. In these languages, it may not be possible to say merely that 'the man went fishing'. Instead, the source of evidence for the statement must also be specified, usually through the use of evidential markers. For example, it may be necessary to indicate whether the speaker saw the man go fishing; has simply assumed that the man went fishing; or was told that he went fishing by a third party. Some languages, such as Hinuq and Tatar, distinguish between first-hand and non first-hand information sources; others, such as Ersu, mark three distinct types of information - directly required, inferred or assumed, and reported. Some require an even greater level of specification: Ashéninka Perené, from South America, has a specific marker to express suspicions or misgivings. Like others in the series, the book illustrates and examines these aspects of language in different cultural and linguistic settings. It will interest linguists of all persuasions as well as linguistically-minded anthropologists.

The Grammar Of Science

by Karl Pearson, The Grammar Of Science Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Grammar Of Science books, "The author notes that this book is primarily intended as a criticism of the fundamental concepts of modern science. At the same time, the author contends that he is so fully conscious of the ease of criticism and the difficulty of reconstruction, that he has attempted not to stop short at the lighter task. Moreover, the author states that he does not holds the labor of the great scientists or the mission of modern science to be of small account. If the reader finds the opinions of physicists of worldwide reputation, and the current definitions of physical concepts called into question, he must not attribute this to a purely skeptical spirit in the author. He accepts almost without reserve the great results of modern physics; it is the language in which these results are stated that he believes needs reconsideration"--Preface. Recent advances in scienti?c and - gineering ?elds call for new disciplines, tools, and concepts. The title of this book is in?uenced by Karl Pearson’s book The Grammar of Science, published in 1892, which brought him recognition as a giant and pioneer of statistics. His book introduced a grammar of science with a - scription of the roles of statistical treatments. While science at times has been misunderstood as not being amenable to a standardized approach, one of the contributions of Pearson’s book was that it o?ered a standardized - proach to science. As his book demonstrated, behind the great innovations of science, there exists a universal approach.

Introduction To The Grammar Of English

by Rodney Huddleston, Introduction To The Grammar Of English Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Introduction To The Grammar Of English books, This textbook provides a thorough and precise account of all the major areas of English grammar. For practical reasons the author concentrates on Standard English and only selected aspects of its regional variation. The book is written for students who may have no previous knowledge of linguistics and little familiarity with 'traditional' grammar. All grammatical terms, whether traditional or more recent, are therefore carefully explained, and in the first three chapters the students is introduced to the theoretical concepts and methodological principles needed to follow the later descriptive chapters. Nevertheless, the book is more than a straightforward 'grammar of English'. Rodney Huddleston does not espouse any formalised contemporary model of syntax and morphology, but he adopts the framework of modern 'structural' linguistics, in a very broad understanding of that term. The grammatical categories postulated derive from a study of the combinational and contrastive relationships the words and other forms enter into, and Dr Huddleston pays particular attention to the problem of choosing between alternative analyses and justifying the analysis he proposes. In this sense his book is addressed to the student of linguistics, who will find Introduction to the Grammar of English a much needed foundation for more advanced work in theoretical linguistics.
