The Europeanization Of Citizenship

by Fiorella Dell'Olio, The Europeanization Of Citizenship Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Europeanization Of Citizenship books, The connection between immigration and citizenship in Europe is an increasingly important issue. This timely and informative book investigates three main aspects of the issue: the degree to which European citizenship encourages the development of a European identity; the impact of European citizenship at the nation-state level in Italy and the UK in regard to domestic policy-making in the areas of immigration and citizenship; and what is needed to make a supranational citizenship work in practice. Fiorella Dell'Olio examines changes in laws on citizenship, nationality, and immigration in Italy and the UK, and assesses the relationship between the political conceptualization of European citizenship and the public response as revealed by opinion polls. She argues that the establishment of a European citizenship has reinforced the ideology of nationality in both Italy and the UK and that it consequently has failed to forge a European identity.

The Europeanisation Of Citizenship Governance In South East Europe

by Jelena Dzankic, The Europeanisation Of Citizenship Governance In South East Europe Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Europeanisation Of Citizenship Governance In South East Europe books, This book looks at how Europeanisation affects the link between citizenship and governance in and across the new states of South East Europe. Contributors unpack the intimate relationship between the European Union, national governments, and citizens through a tripartite model that captures the uneven and diversified effects of Europeanisation on the governance of citizenship-related policy areas. Reflecting on the meaning of governance in different contexts, this book invites the readers to reconsider the terms and concepts that are commonly used for studying the consolidation of new states. By doing so, it directs attention to the transformative power of European integration not only on modes of governance but also on practices and experiences of citizenship. Individual chapters are ‘paired’ to examine three policy areas that are to a different degree affected by the requirements of European Union accession. Combining analysis of policy frameworks with assessment of their impact, the contributors highlight that the impact of Europeanisation can be located on a continuum stretching from ‘strongest’ in matters regarding justice and home affairs, to ‘moderate’ in general issues of social policy, to ‘weakest’ in transforming citizenship through education policies. This book was originally published as a special issue of European Politics and Society.

Europeanization Institution Identities And Citizenship

by Robert Harmsen, Europeanization Institution Identities And Citizenship Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Europeanization Institution Identities And Citizenship books, The theme of Europeanization has, in recent years, come to figure prominently in a wide range of social science analyses concerning both the process of European integration and broader patterns of change in contemporary Europe. Yet, though increasingly a staple of academic discourse, no widely accepted definition of the term has emerged. This volume of the European Studies represents one of the first interdisciplinary attempts to examine the manifold uses and possibilities of a Europeanization problematic. An international team of contributors drawn from the disciplines of Politics, Sociology, History, Anthropology, and Law explore processes of institution-building and identity formation through the optic of Europeanization. Their work offers new insights as regards the development of European integration, pointing particularly to the need for a genuinely interdisciplinary European Studies which encompasses, but is not limited to, the study of the European Union.

The Europeanization Of National Political Parties

by Professor of Political Science Thomas Poguntke, The Europeanization Of National Political Parties Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Europeanization Of National Political Parties books, This is a detailed exploration of how national political parties have responded to the increasing relevance of European governance. The Europeanization of National Political Parties is the first empirical study to examine the effects of the European Union on the internal organizational dynamics of national political parties. It draws on the results of a major, cross-national project and is based on documentary analysis and some 150 interviews with senior party actors in six EU member states: Austria, Britain, France, Germany, Spain and Sweden. Situated in the context of the debate on Europeanization, the contributors illustrate that national political parties have been surprisingly well equipped to handle the challenges of the increasing importance of multi-level governance in Europe. Following a rigorous analytical framework, the country studies examine thirty relevant political parties and systematically address a clearly defined set of empirical questions. The volume ends with two comparative chapters that analyze the findings from a cross-national perspective and that offer theoretical insights into the problems of party government amid increasing European integration. This text will appeal to all those researching in the fields of European studies, political science and comparative politics.

Principles Of European Constitutional Law

by Armin von Bogdandy, Principles Of European Constitutional Law Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Principles Of European Constitutional Law books, For the time being, the political project of basing the European Union on a document entitled 'Constitution' has failed. The second, revised and enlarged edition of this volume retains its title nonetheless. Building on a scholarly rather than black-letter law account, it shows European constitutional law as it looks following the Treaty of Lisbon, with the EU's foundational treaties mandating the exercise of public authority, establishing a hierarchy of norms and legitimising legal acts, providing for citizenship, and granting fundamental rights. In this way the treaties shape the relations between legal orders, between public interest regulation and market economy, and between law and politics. The contributions demonstrate in detail how a constitutional approach furthers understanding of the core issues of EU law, how it offers theoretical and doctrinal insights, and how it adds critical perspective. From Reviews of the First Edition: "...should be mandatory reading for anyone who wants to get a holistic perspective of the academic debate on Europe's constitutional foundations...It is impossible to present the richness of thought contained in the 833 pages of the book in a short review." Common Market Law Review "an enduring scholarly work, which gives an English-speaking audience important, and overdue, access to the long-standing and forever-vigorous traditions of (European) constitutional law... unhesitatingly recommend[ed]." European Law Journal "...real scholarship in the profound sense of the word..." K Lenaerts, Professor of European Law, Leuven

The Europeanization Of Party Politics In Ireland North And South

by Katy Hayward, The Europeanization Of Party Politics In Ireland North And South Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Europeanization Of Party Politics In Ireland North And South books, Ireland’s relationship with the European Union has been determined by the behaviour, actions and discourse of political parties. This book examines this impact through an in-depth analysis of the Europeanization of party politics in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. First, it presents original research on cross-cutting issues that have featured in political debates about European integration, including referendum campaigns on EU treaties, Irish neutrality and party policy positions on the EU. Secondly, it is the first book of its kind to examine in detail how each of the main parties on the island of Ireland has adapted to EU membership. In doing so it both tests the thesis of ‘Europeanization’ and deepens understanding of the impact that EU membership can have on national and sub-national party politics. What this study reveals is that, while Europeanization is clearly evident in all parties in Ireland, including those most critical of European integration, its influence has been strictly curtailed. We argue that the effects of Europeanization in Irish party politics have been limited by enduring resistance to – and conditions placed upon – EU influence in particular policy areas, the importance of pragmatism and (sub-)national priorities in shaping parties’ approaches to European integration and the fact that engagement with the EU continues to be a predominantly elite-led process. This book was published as a special issue of Irish Political Studies.
