Tales Of Ghosts

by Ronald W. Hawker, Tales Of Ghosts Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Tales Of Ghosts books, The years between 1922 and 1961, often referred to as the "Dark Ages of Northwest Coast art," have largely been ignored by art historians, and dismissed as a period of artistic decline. Tales of Ghosts compellingly reclaims this era, arguing that it was instead a critical period during which the art played an important role in public discourses on the status of First Nations people in Canadian society. Those with an interest in First Nations and Canadian history and art history, anthropology, museology, and post-colonial studies will be delighted by the publication of this major contribution to their fields.

A Patchwork Of Prose And Other Loose Ends

by Jim Elledge, A Patchwork Of Prose And Other Loose Ends Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download A Patchwork Of Prose And Other Loose Ends books, The author gives us a series of Anthologies anchored by the novel, A Season of Dishonor. This is the final punctuation mark to the trilogy formed by Elledge’s narratives, To Go Forth in the Midst of Wolves and To Go With Rage. Dishonor is a biographical rendition of the life and times of Margo Winters as she faces the wrath of Senator Joseph McCarthy’s anti-communist tirades during the early ‘50s and follows the path toward her eventual attainment of religious sanctity. This title is followed by three novellas: The Color of Evil, a portrayal detailing the plight of two abused women struggling to break away from overpowering and tormenting men who have plagued their lives. Together they devise a plan to free themselves from this hostile environment and begin life again on their own terms. Of Bread and Wine and Other Things, centers on the plight of a Hispanic man who, after having a heart attack, attends Mass for the first time in years and mentally reviews his life’s journey. The Final Rape of Deirdre Sullivan, a story taking place during the “Troubles” in Northern Ireland in the ‘60s and a young girl’s effort to bring conciliation to this bloody conflict. The rape of the girl is analogous to the rape of Ireland by those troubles. These centerpieces are followed by Muses Lost and Found, a collection of short stories following various genres ranging from the farcical, as described in A Wake for Willie Horse, to a personal journey in California Dreaming, and then the sublime as depicted in Hitching a Ride with Lazarus. You cannot read A Patchwork of Prose and not be affected by the stories and their characters. An engrossing series of scenarios giving a rich, multilayered reading experience.

A Land Of Ghosts

by David G. Campbell, A Land Of Ghosts Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download A Land Of Ghosts books, The biologist and award-winning author journeys deep inside the Amazon rainforest in this eloquent and insightful look at one of earth’s last wild places. For thirty years, biologist David G. Campbell has been exploring the lush wilderness, of the western Amazon, which contains more species than ever existed anywhere on our planet. In A Land of Ghosts, Campbell takes readers on his latest venture. In Cruzeiro do Sul, 2,800 miles from the mouth of the Amazon, Campbell collects three old friends: Arito, a caiman hunter turned paleontologist; Tarzan, a street urchin brought up in a bordello; and Pimentel, a master canoe pilot. Heading further into the rainforest, they survey every living woody plant they can find. The land is so rich that an area of less than fifty acres contains three times as many tree species as all of North America. Campbell knows the trees individually, and he knows the wildlife and the people as well: the recently arrived colonists with their failing farms; the Caboclos, masters of hunting, fishing, and survival; and the refugee Native Americans. These people live in a land whose original inhabitants were wiped out by centuries of disease, slavery, and genocide, taking their traditions and languages with them: a land of ghosts.

The Ghosts Of Cannae

by Robert L. O'Connell, The Ghosts Of Cannae Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Ghosts Of Cannae books, NATIONAL BESTSELLER For millennia, Carthage’s triumph over Rome at Cannae in 216 B.C. has inspired reverence and awe. No general since has matched Hannibal’s most unexpected, innovative, and brutal military victory. Now Robert L. O’Connell, one of the most admired names in military history, tells the whole story of Cannae for the first time, giving us a stirring account of this apocalyptic battle, its causes and consequences. O’Connell brilliantly conveys how Rome amassed a giant army to punish Carthage’s masterful commander, how Hannibal outwitted enemies that outnumbered him, and how this disastrous pivot point in Rome’s history ultimately led to the republic’s resurgence and the creation of its empire. Piecing together decayed shreds of ancient reportage, the author paints powerful portraits of the leading players, from Hannibal—resolutely sane and uncannily strategic—to Scipio Africanus, the self-promoting Roman military tribune. Finally, O’Connell reveals how Cannae’s legend has inspired and haunted military leaders ever since, and the lessons it teaches for our own wars.

The Ghosts Of Guerrilla Memory

by Matthew C. Hulbert, The Ghosts Of Guerrilla Memory Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Ghosts Of Guerrilla Memory books, The Civil War tends to be remembered as a vast sequence of battles, with a turning point at Gettysburg and a culmination at Appomattox. But in the guerrilla theater, the conflict was a vast sequence of home invasions, local traumas, and social degeneration that did not necessarily end in 1865. This book chronicles the history of "guerrilla memory," the collision of the Civil War memory "industry" with the somber realities of irregular warfare in the borderlands of Missouri and Kansas. In the first accounting of its kind, Matthew Christopher Hulbert's book analyzes the cultural politics behind how Americans have remembered, misremembered, and re-remembered guerrilla warfare in political rhetoric, historical scholarship, literature, and film and at reunions and on the stage. By probing how memories of the guerrilla war were intentionally designed, created, silenced, updated, and even destroyed, Hulbert ultimately reveals a continent-wide story in which Confederate bushwhackers--pariahs of the eastern struggle over slavery--were transformed into the vanguards of American imperialism in the West.

The Ghosts Of Martyrs Square

by Michael Young, The Ghosts Of Martyrs Square Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Ghosts Of Martyrs Square books, NOT SINCE THOMAS FRIEDMAN’SFROM BEIRUT TO JERUSALEM IN 1989 HAS A JOURNALIST OFFERED SUCH A POIGNANT AND PASSIONATE PORTRAIT OF LEBANON—A UNIQUELY PLURALIST ARAB COUNTRY STRUGGLING TO DEFEND ITS VIABILITY IN A TURBULENT AND TREACHEROUS MIDDLE EAST. Michael Young, who was taken to Lebanon at age seven by his Lebanese mother after the death of his American father and who has worked most of his career as a journalist there for American publications, brings to life a country in the crossfire of invasions, war, domestic division, incessant sectarian scheming, and often living in fear of its neighbors. Young knows or has known many of the players, politicians, writers, and religious leaders. A country riven by domestic tensions that have often resulted in assassinations, under the considerable sway of Hezbollah (in alliance with Iran and Syria), frequently set upon by Israel and Syria, nearly destroyed by civil war, Lebanon remains an exception among Arab countries because it is a place where liberal instincts and tolerance struggle to stay alive. An important and enduring symbol, Lebanon was once the outstanding example of an (almost) democratic society in an inhospitable, dangerous region—a laboratory both for modernity and violence, as a Lebanese intellectual who was later assassinated once put it. Young relates the growing tension between a domineering Syria and a Lebanese opposition in which charismatic leader and politician Rafiq al-Hariri was assassinated and the Independence Intifada—the Cedar Revolution—broke out. His searing account of his country’s confrontation with its domestic and regional demons is one of hope found and possibly lost. In this stunning narrative, Young tells us what might have been his country’s history, and what it may yet be.
